new to the area

i am new to the are and i am looking for some places to go fishing with my 11 year old. perch and walleye would be ideal.

From your name I assume you live in Okotoks. Head south down the #2 to Pine Coulee. It would only be 1 hour drive at most for you. Many of us on the board fish there. Lots of walleye, some pike, and tons of burbot. Nothing huge except for the odd monster pike but great place for fun or take kids. You can shore and dock fish here in the summer if you don't have a boat as well. Not far from there is clear lake, twin valley, or head west and south to chain lakes for lots of little rainbows.

With your new home I suggest you add trout to your repetoire... Awful nice to just wander down to the Sheep on a sunday morning and break out the fly rod for a couple hours, then walk 5 minutes to main street and have a coffee. :D

thanks for the tips i was actually kicking around the idea of heading down their based on what i have read on the site. it is really nice to get some help

There are a lot of nice holes (some of them just upstream of the town) and I've gotten some fun trout out of there, nothing to brag about but enough that they are really fun on a light fly rod.

I have grown up in Okotoks on the sheep and let me assure you there is trout in there, you just have to find the right holes, I suggest the train bridge and looking upstream of town also. I have caught some decent sized rainbows in the sheep! Also, another good river for trout is the highwood.

Then I'll have to reconsider what I've caught. :lol: Haven't fished it a ton, but have been successful, even caught bull trout, they must be eating something.

good tip. I was hiking along the sheep in the fall and sat down just upstream from the train bridge and watched fish continually coming to the surface and feeding... I mean every couple seconds. Wished I'd had my rod.

I second that,,,caught a 3 pound bull at the sewer plant spillway by the bridge,,,but usually go in at white rock and walk upstream fishin as u go,,,you get the odd big breader up from the bow.
