By far my favorite fish to catch. All fish were caught through STS Guiding.

And my biggest to date, 104-1/2" last fish of a 4 day trip. The pic doesn't do it justice.

Save up and do it, you will be hooked for life! I've never fished the tropics, Salmon, Halibut, rock fish and cod, a dog fish is as close as I've come to a shark, but out of all my fishing, white sturgeon is the top on my list.

Why is sturgeon fishing a favorite for people? Never done it myself. Is the hunt and technique challenging? Or is the fight of such a big fish in a flowing water totally thrilling?

They are pretty interesting looking and mega gigantic in size.

It's like hooking a Volkswagen! 140# test, big game salt water rod and reel. Once you set the hook on a 7'+ fish and it starts to run, you'll know what the big deal is. To see a fish that size come flying out of the water like a rainbow trout is awesome. I had that big one jump and landed no more than 3' from the boat, splashed us in the boat, and I still fought him for another 20min after that. the day after a good day sturgeon fishing you'll have soar arms, and a sore pelvic area from the end of the fishing rod planted there while you fight the fish.

I once fight one for about 75min and chased him over a 1/2 mile, then lost it before even catching a glimpse of it. All I can do is imagine what kind of monster I had hooked up with.

I caught an even bigger one but we lost her while trying to pull her to the other side of the river where we could land her. She had to of been pushing 7'.

Thanks for the info and pictures. I watched some videos and there were jumps too. Definately big game fishing, and accessible. This must be the biggest game fishing that doesn't require travelling far. What rod specs are required?

You need a strong rod and even stronger reel.

Our guide used Shimano Technium sturgeon rods with Shimano Talica reels. 150 lb power pro for line.

Go with a guide at least once to learn how to properly fish for and handle this fish.

What he said, but if you can't afford a Talica the TLD 20 is a great reel, also the Penn squall comes in a left hand where the shimano doesn't. As far as rods go the Shimano Technium is by far and away the most popular rod on the lower fraser, however Lamiglas makes a great rod as does Trophy XL. (both Lamiglas and Trophy XL are hard to find in Alberta though) Do not use anything less then 130 lb braided line as the fish tends to wrap itself around the line and anything smaller then 130 will cut into it.

Like RavYak said though, take a guide first trip out, you wont regret it.

The guides make it look easy but U still can do it yourself. Fresh bait is the key whether it's salmon roe, salmon bellies, or eels and use what's in the river at that time. Except stinkbait --Definitely not fresh !!! Bring the kids too they have a blast with these dinosaurs.
