Don't have the funds to do both - so, pick me out a downrigger setup for lakers and a sturgeon rod & reel setup for option #2.
Want a low profile baitcaster reel and rod combo.
Would like to keep costs below $300cdn.
Give me your thoughts!!
Abu Garcia C3 or C4 Levelwind reel - it will do it all in both applications and is an excellent reel for both. $150.
Spool it up with 50lb braid (a little heavy for rigging but doable - but perfect for sturgeon).
The rod is a bit more problematic as these are two different techniques that require 2 separate lengths/actions/power in an ideal situation ..... but you could get 2 decent rods.
A good downrigger rod is a fast action rod that will load up nicely which, normally, means it won't cast a heavy weight very well. I would get a Mid range Shimano like a TDR downrigging rod. $50.
A good sturgeon rod should be heavy, long, bullet proof, moderate in action and able to chuck big weight. Heavy power, moderate fast action, casts up to 4-5oz - something like a Clarus would be pretty good with the $100 or so you have left.
That would be my choice given the $300 budget.
