recently I found a perfect field containing thousands of well educated geese
with the influx of guides and outfitters hitting the area
all the geese were getting weary
and very hard to convince them commit
(after 9 unsuccessful set ups we were getting very discouraged)
they wouldn't come in to conventional set ups
circled high looking for layout blinds amongst the decoys
staying just out of range until they were certain they were safe to land amongst
so convincing the land owner to let us set up amongst his swaths of barley was feat in it self
due to an anti hunter land owner it was the one and only field that hadn't been hunted this year so far
but we managed to convince him to give us permission
( a story in it self)
we studied the geese and their feeding coming and goings
favorite feeding are to land in for 3 or four days
so with that knowledge we set up or decoys
on a south slope leading away from a low area which held high cat tails
right against the cat tails we set our bale blind at the bottom end of the landing zone
with adding cat tails to the sides and top the bale blind looked just like a higher mound amongst the cat tails
right on cue the geese started arriving at 4:45 pm
with a flock of approximately 300 or more birds
they did their circle thing to check out the decoys
felt safe and decided to commit
well as we were set up in the landing zone
wow what a shoot two of us shooting we had point blank birds with in 22 minutes we both filled our limits
there were seven flocks that came in all containing 300 or more birds per flock
it was an experimental set up testing out the bale blind (made by muddy outdoors)
and reversing the blind area from amongst the usual area surrounded by decoys
its so nice to try a new set up and have it all come together for an epic hunt to end our season on a good note
what are some of you're more unconventional set ups that turned out to be a success

I have found feeding lines to work really good in the late season.
