With cold nights coming most of this week things should be good to go by next weekend east of cowtown.

2 inches of ice I sure hope you are wearing a life vest.

Drove so of 36 yesterday and could clearly see the majority of the lake was still open. I think it is a few weeks before it is what most would consider safe.

The reality is 2" of new solid ice will support around 400lbs.

basic rule of thumb (for 1" to 5" of new clear solid ice) is thickness X thickness X 100lbs

1" = 100lbs
2" = 400lbs
3" = 900lbs
4" = 1600lbs
5" = 2500lbs

6" and above the formula changes a little ad reduces the static load incrementally as you go up in thickness.

BUT ..... keep in mind those are clean, clear, new, solid ice on still water ....... I don't walk onto a lake/pond until there is 5"-6"of ice.

AND ....... keep in mind just because it's 2" here, doesn't mean it isn't 1" or less only a few feet away.

I've been on chain lakes when a full size truck has rolled up to us to ask "how's the fishing" on 6"-7" of ice ..... YIKES ..... I might have peed a little. You could feel/see the ice bowing under the truck ........

either way .... be safe and good luck

This was us three years ago. Test drilled in four different locations, minimum test depth was 18" so we figured good to go.
4" of ice where we're broke through. Ice can change quite a bit within a matter of feet. Which is why I personally would never venture on a lake on anything less than 6". But then again I've busted through ice before and prior to that I thought I could go on almost any ice.

All be safe out there! Was walking on what I thought was a solid two inches of ice the other day when the ice reminded me nicely to get my carcass back to shore and I did....

ive gone on 2" of ice before but i was wearing a floatation suit with a rope around my waist and my father 1-' behine me.
falling through the ice isnt necesarilly fatal, its the gasp of air that your body wants to take.
last season alone i went through simcoe 3 times from pressure cracks withought a floatation suit. for those freaking out, i highly sudgest looking up a video from gordon gizbrek from the university of manitoba.

how far north are ya? im thinking about going out and chacking on the ponds near where im at.
