I would personally go with the Shakespeare ugly stik. It is a really reliable rod and you could probably do chin ups off of it and it would not break. That is my 2 cents

I really like the ones made by St.crouix and fenwick.... The St. Crouix has lots of backbone and a bit less sensitive than the fenwick... The fenwick is lots of fun to fight lakers on in 80 to 100 feet of water... I personally like a medium heavy action rod for lakers and pike... Heavy action rods take away from the fight and I feel like I'm just winching the fish in... Especially with a bait cast reel.

The HT Ice Blue rods are good for Lakers. The 28 inch rods are good for fishing in ice shelters, while the 34" are good for outside shelters.

These rods will run you between 30 and 35 bucks each.

They hold up to abuse, cheap and provide good action for fish over 6/7 lbs.

I would go with a Frabill 38" ice hunter "gussy" heavy action with a 1000 size shimano loaded with 10lb power pro. Many lakers and pike have fallen to that combo in my hands and I feel for what you pay ($35) it is head and shoulders above many rods aimed at pike and lakers. It's got s 9" handle, large guides, and a soft tip that transitions quickly into a stiff backbone. I've caught lakers to 20 pounds on this rod/reel combo and never felt under gunned. It's a very lightweight combo as well so a 8-10 hour day of jigging is very doable. An honourable mention would be the daiwa triforce rods sold by the fishin hole. They are more parabolic than the frabill but still bring the fight to the fish. You could buy one of each and still be in the ball park of 1 st.croix rod.

Good luck with your choice.

Looked into it and this is a spinning rod. Was looking for something for a bait caster. Thanks for the reply though.

Ah I definitely read that wrong, thought you were in search of a spinner. In that case you can look for a daiwa triforce bait caster in medium (the fishin hole) or a Jason Mitchell / clam mackinaw rod (bass pro). The mackinaw has spiral wrapped guides to reduce rod twist under load. Both good choices, the mackinaw was designed for lakers/ice fishing and the daiwa is generic. Haven't used the mackinaw personally but if I fished baitcasters more I'd probably own a few.

The Jason Mitchell "mackinaw" is hands down the best non custom rod out there!

I have of a few of the St.Croix ice rods - nice and solid rods with excellent high quality reel seats and smooth guides. Cabela's had them on sale for $30-$40 each.
