Hi guys

I am slowly getting into ice fishing more and more.

For ice fishing rainbow trout, compared to summer/fall fishing:

1. Do they still travel at the same depth or do they go deeper in winter?
2. Do they still go for the same baits?
3. Recommendations for bait during the winter?

Thanks for any assistance

Colin

1. Yes, in my experience the same depths. 8-12 feet of water away from shore.
2. Small jigs, or any lure that sits horizontal I find works best
3. Medium minnows I find better than worms or maggots

The biggest thing is early season for trout. They can feed hard early then conserve energy for the rest of the winter. After Christmas trout fishing can be slow or shut right down depending on the lake.

Good luck.

The lake I fish for trout ( in BC ) produces best results Feb and March,

The fish at different levels from 1 foot to bottom , up to 18 inches just under the ice, usually best results in very early A.M for about 2 hours,

Bait is best to use very small presentation of fresh shrimp( size about that of kernel of corn on a black, white , green 1inch wriggler or on a very small glow type jig,

This lake has Brookies to 8 pounds and Rainbows over 20 pounds,

Average Brook trout 2 to 4 pounds, Rainbows 1 to 6 pounds are most common,

Fin fish or parts of fin fish are not allowed USED as BAIT by Regulation,

Moon phase plays a huge part in action,,,

Wow ! It's true ! Alberta lake really suck !

I like to use small pcs of cooked shrimp for bait. Sometimes pink power bait works good too.

So far this winter, although the ice is about 12 inch thick, fishing success is less than dismal ,,
A 1 pounder of either species would be great,,, :angry3:

I was out the other day and a couple of guys caught 2. An older gent got a nice 16" one.

I went home with only a muskrat siting!
