Just wondering if anybody targets the walleye out at Wabamun and how big these Walleye are getting. I have fished Wabamun in the past , but it was always for big pike. I read that they stocked walleye in there four or five years ago and just wondering if anybody has been catching these walleyes yet.

I've had good luck anytime I drill a hole and the bottom is sandy.

Just drop a smaller jig tipped minnow down a few times to stir up the silt and have had many walleye come in quite aggressively.

Nothing of any substantial size but lot's of fun.

my secret has been when I arrive at a new hole, jig the hell out of a rattling rap for a minute then drop down a jig and minnow. If they are anywhere in the area they come to see what the fuss is about. Not usually aggressive enough to hammer the rattler but never say no to the minnow

Lots are being caught. The theory that they were just going to be pike candy have proven false. Certainly the original adults that were stocked in are quite large but the fry that were stocked in are sill on the high growth curve.

Hope you have a merry Christmas

Caught a few in the spring and they were about class C size. A couple more years and should be lots in the class B to A size. Tag size that is. Gonna be a good lake for netting fish from and stocking other lakes in the area. Useing it as a hatchery, sorta speaking. In the fish stocking program.

Don't know why I can"t get tables to come out right here but you should still be able to figure out what is meant.
First column is number of fished stocked during the event.
Second column is size of fished stocked during event.
Third column is Date of event.
Last column is the expected size.

Obviously not all stocked fish survived but this should give you an idea of relative numbers and expected sizes.

Wabamun Lake Walleye Stocking
First FWIN 2010 before stocking 0 walleye present

FWIN 2013 Fish caught 109 Average size 30.8 cm (expected now 38-40 cm) Largest 65.2 cm

I used a moderate Alberta Walleye Von Bertalanffy growth curve to generate the expected sizes for each stocking event.

95% of the walleye are still small, around 15 inches.

There are a few a bit smaller and a few a bit larger and the very odd decent one out there.

Its almost easier to catch walleye now then it is pike... The pike are so skinny these days too, they don't seem to compete well with the walleye which for the most part are pretty healthy.

this skinny pike thing happens in most lakes over stocked with walleye , they eat themselves and ever other fish in the lake out of food.

Walleye do have a significant feeding advantage over other predators by virtue of their eyesight in low light conditions.
