oh man, I'd kill to pay a grand a year. I just got offered a spot in my building in downtown Calgary for the low bargain rate of $385/month but turned it down as I can park at the Ctrain station (reserved parking section) for about $90/mo and then pay $103 for a transit pass.

Used to pay $320/month for heated underground when I worked in downtown Edmonton. Work paid $150 out of it. Definitely not cheap and always full. Show up a little late and you park on the roof.

If you don't pay for parking at work, you may be liable for the free parking you get to be a taxable benefit on your T4. There are some exceptions.

Me - I happen to live near Century Park and just take the LRT, except on the very odd occasion that I actually need my vehicle during the day (and that is a pain, between the rush hour driving, and finding any all day parking in downtown Chuk after 7:00 am is difficult and stupidly expensive). I could just take the paid parking of course, but ... $80 per month (roughly with discount for buying at least 10 passes per month for the employment group), quicker, far less hassle, and can read the paper on the train, whilst being entertained by the "flow of humanity", which takes in everything from some friends with whom to converse, to seeing the latest hipster and trans variations on "style", to some interesting "self-conversations" and public dissertations from the clearly deranged (?).

The problem for most, in Edmonton, is the utter lack of intelligent planning to encourage taking the LRT. If you don't happen to live near a station, as I do, then there is nowhere to park for free or at a reasonable rate (the cheaper paid parking at CP is very small in volume and has a very long waiting list, and the free parking is full by 7:00 am, and god help you if you park at Southgate Mall all day - non permissio, fine and towed). The free parking at CP (about 1300 vehicles) is going to be gone fairly shortly - the only reason it exists at all is the land developer has had to defer their plans for the condo towers on that site for several years, and they are about to go forward with the towers as rentals (soft condo market). If the city people had half a brain (wishful thinking?) they would put up a huge (2000 cars?) minimalist multi-storied parkade with relatively low parking rates at the north end of the CP lands, where they own the land, and continue to attract the heavy traffic to the LRT at that location. But they seem to be interested, and fixated, in LRT as a further contributor to traffic gridlock, rather than any solution (?).

When I worked downtown Calgary parking was ~$600/month in the parkade under our building. Company paid for it but it was a taxable benefit. More than I've ever paid for rent.

Agree a 100%. I used LRT for 2 years but got sick of waiting for buses to reach LRT station. Century park gets full by 7:00AM. Now I park downtown, heated underground. Costs me $160 a month, don't mind it one bit.

Even at $160/month, would almost be cheaper to take a cab to work. Probably would be cheaper if you factored in gas, insurance, maintenence and the general cost of your vehical. Never a cold vehical in the winter.

Could probably have a Limo piick you up everyday.

I run a building downtown Calgary, and we charge $350/ mo for outside reserved parking. Employees get a discount at $250/ mo and yes i pay that as well but i get to charge back half of it in my monthly bill to them.I have no option but to drive to work as i need a vehicle to do my job. The impark lot behind us charges $450/ mo with out a reserved spot so you may or may not have a spot when you arrive. We barely cover the property taxes on the lot with what we charge, Mayor Spenshi and his council slapped us with a 268% tax increase last year.

I rent a stall at one of the apartment buildings downtown Edmonton for $135/month. Along with this I car pool so I split this cost with my friend. Just glad that no one else in the apartment building needs the spot.

A bit off topic, but I know people who rent space at a marina in Miami because it is cheaper than paying for parking. The marina spaces come with one parking spot.

It's been a while since I was in a cab. Last time I was in a cab in Vancouver, there were no new Canadians driving. :thinking-006: I said it was a while ago.

I don't pay for parking. summer I park outside. Winter in my heated shop.:)

Cabs are not cheap, I do have a regular account with Cab Company in Edmonton. My kids take it from school everyday. It costs 17 dollars for an 8 km trip. My trip one way to downtown is probably 3 times that distance.

As regards insurance gas etc, I still need vehicles to do other things. Even if it was cheaper, I still would drive mine just because of the convenience factor.

Well I live only 15 km from the downtown core. It's a 19 minute drive.
Cab fare would be around $80 return each day.
