So I haven't done this technique since like..... 30 or 40 years ago at Wabamun.

We were at a resevoir in the south here trying for whites.....in a proven area..
And no joy!

In desperation, I ran my wireworm about a foot to 2 feet under the ice.. And it wasent there for 10 seconds and WHAM!!

Saw the dang thing take my worm. Landed in less than 5s.... WHAM. Another!

Next five minutes and I had four landed.... Missed two.

My kid missed three. Landed one!

Buddy missed 5! He's an unlucky guy....

1/2 hour fishing and we must have tangled with 10-20 fish.

Anyone else try this technique?

I have seen this with rainbow and pike too, sometimes it can mean theres low oxygen in the lake and they move up in the water column

Don't think that's it

Another couple caught a bunch of nice pike in 15-20 ft of water

Big ling got caught in 30 ft not far from us.

I was at wab today and seen lots of whites in the townsite. I couldn't get them to bite but I didn't really think that was a good place for whites. Next tine I will try a little higher up.

including pike, fish are eating backswimmers/shrimp from the underside of the ice.

if I could get my flies out and under the ice for a distance I could slay some beaut trout, but alas I am stumped. was thinking about making a lure that walks under the ice like what old commercial fishermen used to run netting, or something like a little umbrella that propels itself, but....

Yup Bessie ... a year or so back in Sylvan on a bright sunny day in 25-30 fow with very little snow cover in March.

Was fishin in my black portable shed, the Whites, were cruising just under the ice and stopped for a look perhaps due to the dark area just under my shack, regardless, they liked the twinkle of a brass Wetaskiwin and it didn't take long to put a few in the pail.
