This news story sounds like ISIL stealing oil from Syria and selling it to Turkey.

Only it's Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Are we going third world out there? Next we'll have guys with cordless drills filling plastic buckets from diesel pipelines

Anybody care to explain how the "black market" for stolen crude works?

How would this contraband get back into the chain and how would the thief and a gang of gypsy truckers get paid?

This sounds more like individual desperation than an organized oil crime gang cartel. Maybe the perp was behind on his rig payments.

He was stealing the load not the oil, picked up the load at a battery dropped it off at a treater and billed for it. The oil company didn't catch on for a few months. CBC reporting is done by morons at the best of times.

And yes the truck payments still keep coming even if you're not working.

Good one.

The ISIL guys doing this would have 19 wives, 190 children and way more unibrow hair than resides in the entire province of Saskatchewan. No rig payments to make on the "donated" truck either.

That's already happened, but no need for a drill. If you know where to go all you need is a wrench, pipe fitting and a length of hose.

Didn't read the article but with a little forged paperwork, a few drivers and a place to swap out one tank for another it could be done.

They probably charged him with theft over $5000 because he used a company trailer to take the oil, theft still applies even if its temporary.

I was thinking he took somebody's oil to a treater not necessarily the same company's. A load is a load
