My brother was going through pictures from when he was field operating last summer. Said he killed this mouse and as soon as it died these bugs started coming out and he said they were a fair size, you can see the hole in the mouse from it.

Mouse botfly larvae

Beat me to it, I just found that same answer.

It occurs to me I shouldn't be browsing for info and pictures on those while eating. Happily, this is a venison steak from the deer my pops took a couple weeks ago and is too delicious not to continue eating.

Help... confused...
Is it in a live mouse or are eggs layed into dead mouse then the larvae grow?

I'm gonna relive the movie Silence Of The Lambs tonight while sleeping I just know it!!:sign0176:

Live mouse was carrying it. Poor little buggers get eaten alive from the inside until its time for the botfly to move on.

Nature is not your friend.

Yuk! I don't care for mice but I feel for anything, even a mouse, that has to endure that!:scared0015:

Eggs are laid on the host and the larvae embed into the skin, usually. Some species eggs are carried by mosquitoes and are injected with the bite. They are a true parasite, and generally don't harm the host. Go over to YouTube and search botfly, hours of entertainment.

IIRC Jamie from myth busters actually carried one for the entire 28day larval period and they filmed it emeging from his skin. :snapoutofit:

Bot flies also live on cattle, as well as a host of other boring insects. Enjoy your steaks ....

I didn't know they were that far north. I've heard of them in southern Ontario and some of the eastern provinces.

I can't ever remove a mouse from a trap without remembering seeing mice with these parasites around smoky lake in the early 1980s? Back then ( as kids) we would spend countless hours flipping over old shingles and boards and smacking mice with sticks, or my favourite old broken ax handle. I had a terrier dog at the time that was a mouse killing champion, I don't know how he didn't end up with them! Nightmarish😳, I haven't seen them since, thankfully!

These the same Bot Flies that infest horses ? Eggs are laid on lower legs, horses lick them up and presto, they're internal.

Not the same as far as I know. They are in the same family but different genus and species. With a bit of googles help I've come up with this... Gastrophilus intestinalis are the ones we find on the horses. One of the species of genus Cuterebra is probably what came from the mouse. Both are from the family Oestridae.

Just kidding hillbillyreefer! It's actually very interesting to see what appears to me to be more "genius" folks here inform us on many different professions and special skills! Thanks for sharing your "genus" knowledge! ;)
