The Kicking Horse River at Golden BC has very good rafting. I found it more exciting than the rafting around Jasper. There are a few companies operating at Golden, I went with Glacier a couple of times and they were good. Not sure if they is much of a difference between companies or not.

Have you ever rafting the the sunwapta in jasper? This will all be our first time rafting would the rivers in Kicking horse be suitable for us?

If you are going south check out elk river rafting in fernie. Elk river is great with lots of swimming spots. Bull river was the best, easy Rapids with the " sandwich maker" at the end then opens up to a lake. Not sure if they are still in business, that was 10 years ago.

I've used Alpine Rafting out of Golden a few times for the Kicking Horse, but not for a number of years. Most places offer two trips, the "upper" river and one with both the upper and lower river as they put them. The lower river is quite a bit more challenging, but the upper river is fun too.

Went with them a couple of years ago, great trip, just don't think you're along for the ride. Take a disposable waterproof camera, they sell them at the office. Think they run the Kananaskis as well.

A man spoken with true experience. Wife and I did it twice and some areas category 5 spots around suicide turn. Wife got ejected and got banged up a little. Absolutely great run but timing on the run off weather upper or lower is everything. Enjoy.

I have been a guide on the Upper Red Deer River for more than a decade for a company called Mukwah Tours. Depending on the time of year it can be quite wild, on par or exceeding the Kicking Horse or tame enough where you could take the entire family. Just google "Mukwah Tours" and if you decide to call, you will speak directly to owner named Ryan. The base camp is located SW of Sundre so it is a short drive from either Calgary or Edmonton areas and is situated in absolutely stunning countryside (Ya-ha Tinda) as many people here could attest to. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask!

I've seen whitewater rafts on the Smoky River along Hwy. 40 north of Grand Cache. Looked fairly challenging in some spots.

Here's a website with all the river rafting in Alberta..

Been on the Sunwapta once, the Fraser a couple times, the Kicking Horse once, and the Elk River once. They were all lots of fun, Kicking Horse was the best I think, but the others were worthwhile as well. If you were thinking Jasper, you could do both the Sunwapta and the Fraser in one weekend quite easily. Cool thing about the Fraser trip is portaging around Reargaurd falls.

Unfortunately, since the flood, the Red Deer isn't what it used to be, Damn , and definitely not the grade of the Kicking Horse. Did the Colorado, below Hoover Dam, there's a nice family type ride with spectacular scenery.

If you do the kicking horse, which I'd certainly recommend, call ahead to check if the lower section is open. The upper is great, and the lower better, but closed during certain conditions.

Used to have my own whitewater raft (14' Zebec) with complete centre oar frame. Have done the Red Deer many times at all water levels and have also done the Kicking Horse both on a guided trip and in my raft with no guide. Kicking Horse exceeds any day on the Red Deer IMO. Lower Canyon is a fun ride but the danger lies in the opportunity to be rescued if you are ejected. Danger in rivers is not just rated in rapid size but also the opportunity to be rescued.
If you're an adventure seeker put on your wetsuit, helmet and your lifejacket (tight) and go do the Kicking Horse.
