I am planning on ice fishing lower kananaskis lake soon and there is a bait ban on that lake.

What do you use for trout on a still line / tip up if you can't use bait?

Thanks for the help!

I was going to use spoons and rubber body jigs but having never been myself, I can't say that's the successful method :) ... legal so far as I know... will be checking.

Got me thinking perhaps tomorrow might be a good day to see if they work...:thinking-006:

Tube jigs are the perfect do nothing jigs,if it's breezy rig up something to catch the wind to give a bit of tip movement. I use a pc of cardboard, tooth pick and attach it to the tip with some tape or rubber bands (just watch that you don't take away from the flex of the tip)the other thing I would suggest is put a stinger on,the bullies will mouth what ever you put on all day long with out you Knowing it ,so adding a trailing hook pays off. Tip ups won't work for this but a bell attached to the rod is all I use.

Caught plenty of fish on flys. Bead head nymphs, scuds to name a few

Just a heads up.
It is getting very hard to find unscented grubs/tails/plastics etc. Many/most are salted, scented or impregnated which would make them illegal. Not sure how tough they are with this though.

Suggestion, maybe try maribou jigs or flys, they move with very little current and just a little spin.;):)

You can never go wrong with a Chubby Darter when there is a bait ban

A line that's dead still with no bait isn't going to do much for you. If you're planning on using the still line as your second line, go buy a windlass tip up to at least get some movement. Once you've got movement a fly with a bead head should work.

Got a few bulls last weekend on a jig head that has a little bit of a orange tail on it with no bait or movement at lower K. Was surprised it worked.

I know of a lot of chironomid fishers who would disagree. Sometimes dead still is exactly what the fish want, heck sometimes it outfishes every other method.

On lower kananaskis I'd probably use a wind catching tip up with a scentless tube jig or a bucktail in white and orange.

The Cabelas and the Fishin' Hole both carry unscented up here in Edmonton in the bulk bins or in bags.

I prefer a nice double tail rubber on a jig head for baitless presentations.

A windlass tip up is a great idea if you are not tending that extra line.

Quite true that there are times fishing dead still with a fly like that is effective. I think that's the exception rather than the rule. I'd rather have a presentation with some movement under ice.
