Bite has been hit and miss.

Ice looks sketchy with the thaw last week - however, trucks driving all over without issue - approx. 16 to 18 inches minimum.

Ice was fine for me +18" everywhere I drilled/drove. Lots of vehicles out. Little to no snow with the odd hard packed drift. I drove around in 2WD all day. Walleye bite for me was slower than normal but still managed a half dozen plus a few hammer handles and a ling.

I still have a tag for that lake, any tips on where to fish the walleye in the winter on that lake? Also, are there any perch in there? I've only fished that lake 3 times in my life, and all 3 times it was summer.

There's some heaves getting a bit bigger since the temp changes.... but no issues wherever I've been driving.... Near 20" of ice in most spots....

The main walleye bite is at sun-up & sundown..... If you're fishing mid-day you'll have to work for your fish but the 'eyes can be found most of the day.....

Perhaps your right.

I have found though that because there are so many walleye in the lake they bite all day long and you just have to find them. When they move you need to move to. I have tried getting there early an staying late but they always seem to bite about the same for me on Pigeon through out the day.

Of course it might be that I have just never found them at sundown. If I might ask, what depth are you fishing at sun down? Are you close to flats or weeds at that time.

If you don't feel comfortable answering that's OK.

Good luck out there.

We've done well this year for quality eyes. The number of fish caught isn't very high, but quality of fish is high for sure. In 2 trips we have 6-7 from 53-64cm, all of which were very fat, healthy walleye. Only caught 2 walleye outside of the above range and they were around 40-45cm.

18-22 FOW. Biggest fish came after sundown.

does anyone know the reason why those whitefish disappeared in such a big lake? I see lots of us love to catch whites all day long.

The Walleye have eaten all the Small whites leaving the large whites to get huge. As time goes on though the large whites will begin to die off and whites will be harder and harder to catch.

I like to set up in 8-10 FOW for the evening walleye bite. I think the higher numbers of walleye have pushed the whites deeper over the years.... I've been seeing the whites in deeper water over the last month..... I'm still seeing smaller whites just not as many of them as you would in a lake like Gull where the numbers of different fish are a bit more balanced.....

Remember all the 30" + walleye from the 90's? Brother in law caught many. Lefty I believe caught a couple. Such a fertile lake. Too fertile.

When I woke up, I heard the wind & decided that a sun morning fish was a better idea than chasing my gear across the ice.... Lol
