I'm looking to get the Old Man a decent folding knife for his 65th. I have been to cabelas and wholesale just looking but nothing has grabbed my attention. It will be for everyday use, he does a lot of fishing and camping in the summer and winters down south where he likes to quad quite a bit. Looking to spend around the $150 mark. Any suggestion on brands, website or stores to check out in the Edmonton area would be great. I'm familiar with many of the well known brands (buck, gerber, Kershaw, etc). Its definitely something he wouldn't ever buy for himself. Thanks for the help

I have a Spyderco Paramilitary 2, pretty good folder, I've been happy with it.
Check out 'TheApostleP' on YouTube, good knife reviews.

I've been eyeballing this knife website a lot lately, it's well-reviewed by members over on CanadianGunNutz. I personally like the various versions of the Buck Vantage Pro, though some are discontinued and only available where dealers still carry stock.

Look at the Kershaw black horse. I bought one years ago, as an everyday ranch knife, and hunting knife . I had a custom pancake holster done up at a saddle maker for it. Love it.

Edit: I see they have changed them :(. I had an original that was about 100.00 in the 80~s. New BH II are 40.00 ?

Maybe try to find an original Puma, Warden

Warriors and Wonders is a great web store for sure. I am very partial to Spyderco. I really like the leaf shape blade for some reason. Plus the thumb hole makes one handed opening a breeze.

At that price, spyderco is your best bet.

That would depend on what style your looking for. A classy gentleman's folder that might be used occasionally or are you looking for the every day run of the mill knife? For a 65th birthday I personally would go for something custom made for the uniqueness of the gift. You can find lots of good custom makers here, finding a custom made folder for $150 will be a problem though.

If a small fixed blade is something you'll consider then there are lots of good options listed on that site.

If your set on a commercially made folder then I would suggest find an excuse to take him to Wholesale or Cabela's so he can try a few different knives in his hand. Knives are like guns, just because one looks good, doesn't mean it will fit him well. Spyderco knives are good quality.

I'd like to have a Case pocket knife, I have lost/broken many over the years I go for the lower priced ones I never lose them. I still mourn the loss of a Puma lock back I had.

This is the one I had my friend build me- it's a bit over the top because of Damascus and Mastadon scales, but I wanted a true custom!

Ask to speak the the owner Paul, good guy and there is no shortage of selection; including some of the knives mentioned in the thread.
Good luck.

65th birthday, folder, requires a custom one of a kind knife.
Got one made in 2003 for myself, a year later for my father in law and one made for my son with antler from his first deer he ever shot.
Special knives for special people require a once in a lifetime custom touch!

A local guy out of Cold Lake Ray Matton of Matton Edge. Does great work and very reasonable prices.

Does all the leather work too.

This little folder has been through a few moose, deer but now just cuts my apple up but is always sharp and good to go!:)

I don't have any of their folders, but I absolutely LOVE my Grohmanns. If you order from their website, then you can customize, engrave, etc. Great quality Canadian products.

Here is something else you might consider. My wife bought me this "Official Rainbow Trout Collector Knife" from the Bradford Exchange. It was quite some time ago, but they have a number of different themes that they incorporate in their knife collection. This one has 2 scrimshaw atrworks from Rick Fields of Rainbow Trout, and also a Rainbow Trout engraved in gold. Beautifull knife and still hardy enough for everyday use, though truth is I don't carry it around all that much. Check out collector knifes on google. Some very unique knives out there at a reasonable cost. Good luck.

EDIT... Just looked at some of the paperwork that came with the knife, and I guess they call it the "Sportsman's Fish and Game Collector Knives " line.

For a hard use knife I still think the Buck 110 is the best folding single blade available. Knife quality for the dollars can't be beat and guaranteed for life. If I was looking for a multi blade daily use folder, Case and Queens Cutlery are the premier knives. For a presentation piece, can't beat custom made, and many also make great daily use knives, but $150 isn't going to go far with most custom builders for a folder. Think more $350 and up.

http://www.bushcraftcanada.com/products/category.cfm?category=90

Queen Cutlary Bison Horn Trapper, $209 Also have lifetime Guarantee but many multi blades do NOT lock open so you need to look around if you want a multi blade locker. Queen and Case do make them.

Thanks for all the info, its given me a lot of options to consider. I would love to get a custom knife done but i don't think it will me in my budget to do it well. I really like the Grohmann Mini Russell Lock Blade, add a case and shipping it will come well in budget

http://www.grohmannknives.com/index.php/products/outdoor/folding-knives/340s-mini-russell-lock-blade-detail

I will still look at different options, don't have to pull the trigger for a couple of weeks.

Phone a few knife makers, maybe they got one that has been sitting and they will let it go for a good price, ya never know.
