Just as an FYI, I have night fished 3 times on this lake and by far the best spot for us seemed to be right near the bridge. Not sure if this is always the case though I thought I would mention it. Glow jigs with a stinger hook with the smallest smelt you could by was an excellent set up. By the time we got our jigs to bottom the ling would be biting within 3 seconds, leaving us laughing our buts off until we nearly froze to death......good luck out there.

jts1
02-24-2009, 11:17 PM
I normally just go a lil south of the boat launch out in 20 FOE or so. Not sure of the Ice conditions. But there is lots of ice open to any new spots. The glow jig ans smelt is what we use as well works great. What surprises me is the amount of Eyes a guy can get @ night there.

calgarygringo
02-25-2009, 07:50 AM
Don't worry about ice near the boat launch. When we were there Monday it measured 23 inches on the stick so no problem to drive on. We found a little more action a few feet deeper than we have been fishing lately. We were in a bit over 20 feet instead of the 15-16 range and had some better action especially after dark.

brianscott
02-25-2009, 01:51 PM
Lethal we should ride out together, save some gas.

BearnDown
02-25-2009, 04:38 PM
Hope you guys don't mind me picking your brains a bit. Do you "charge" your glow jigs with a camera flash or anything?

If I can talk Mama into it, I may just swing out too, we just had a baby (#3) last Wednsday so I'm not sure if I'll get away with 2 days in a row.....yet.

What about Anchovies? Small pieces off them maybe?

Does it fish good all night or just around dusk?

How big do the Burbs get in there?

Do you "thump" the bottom constantly with your jig, or a few thumps then leave it hang, or...?

rocky97
02-25-2009, 04:39 PM
if u wanna try a new spot i have a good spot just down from the parking lot on the right side of the road goin towards the lake from stavely. usually end up catching around 20 fish for one person in a couple hours

Yah Brian ill give you a call tomorrow and work it out.

Bearn i find the best thing to charge the glow with is a LED or halogen.

Ive found the fish there like the real whole deal ive tried those gulp alive there and havent had nearly as good of success with smelts.

Last few times i was out there i could have fished right through the nite without the bite slowing latest ive been out there fishing was 1am.

The fish arent the best quality average size of a burb is prolly 15-18" walleye bout 12-16". There is still the odd bigger one in there but nothing spectacular.

To first get the fish in the area i like to mess the bottom up but once the fish are in the area you wont have a chance to thump the bottom.

A lil tip for those that use tipups there. Even if your flag hasnt gone off doesnt mean u dont have a fish on. Last outing i had my flag hadnt gone off all nite went over to pull it up and there was a burbot on, ive heard of them sitting under the hole and eating it and then sitting there after eating but never had it happen, needless to say that guy came home with me for obvious reasons.

moosehunter3-0
02-25-2009, 05:34 PM
ling are masters at swallowing a bait and regurgitating the hook, so when you flag goes up dont let them screw with the bait to long and I set my flag hairtrigger. Usually they just swim to bottom and sit there so your spool will make 2 revolutions and stop, then you can hammer em lol

Don't worry, fisheralex has'nt caught a burb in his life, and when he catches one he may need you to come over and take the hook out, he probly won't want to touch it, he's got delicate hands and them things are darn ugly. LOL

02-25-2009, 11:18 PM
reminds me of my girlfriend,
she was casting a little spinner bait for trout off of shore once when we were camping and caught a nice 10 inch rainbow(I was hiking at the time) she didnt want to take the hook out so once she had reeled it in, she opened the bail and gave it 10 feet of line to swim around on till I got there to unhook it.

After I stopped laughing, i pulled the lil guy in and let it go.

Will be leaving Calgary @ 430-500. Will be in a silver Blazer with Ice Cube shelter. Somewhere around the boat launch. Unless we do the caravan thing. Sounds like we should have a good turn out. If someone has a spot that they think we should try I'm open to new locations.

I haven't met anybody off the boards other than BigBore but I'd like to join all of you and meet some local anglers. Hopefully work is not crazy so I can head out while there's still light. I'll be in a red Nissan Frontier.

I've had good luck off the boat launch area but open to try new places too. Is the ice good everywhere (other than under the bridge)?

SOOooooooo, what about a new guy who has never met any of you joining in?

When I started I used fishing line wrapped around a log (basically the log was the spool), not pretty but still worked :). If I'm out without the wife I'll probably have extra tipups I can lend and my hand auger if you want a little workout.

You can also use the lower part of your regular fishing rod as a semi-ice rod, had a two piece rod break at the tip so I'm glad I kept the lower half. That's what I use now and it works so well I never bothered to buy a real ice fishing rod.

FishBrain
02-26-2009, 02:48 PM
OH i have a stick and fishing string!!!
just didnt want to look to technically behind. I see all these guys out there with thes little rods and thought geez if I go out there with this stick and line I wont catch a thing with all the technology on the lake.

Is it legal to fish all night? also would a car get in there or is there to much snow?

02-26-2009, 11:32 PM
^ take highway 2 south until you see 527, this intersection should be just before the town of stavely. Follow the road all the way down past the bridge. Once pass the bridge follow the road down until you see a dirt road. Turn left of the dirt road follow the road down and take a left at the boat launch sign.

brianscott
02-26-2009, 11:33 PM
Im pretty sure its west of stavely and a little south.
At the turnoff to Stavely from the highway, turn right instead of left.
Follow that for a bit it then turn south @ the first intersection and follow the caravan ov vehicles till you see the sign for the boatlaunch turn there and you have arrived.

SuCraM

Sorry guys but the spawn is long finished. We fish there every week and have not seen a burb with eggs or milk since January. Have been watching while cleaning the last few weeks and none to be found so my guess is it happened mid January. They were coming out fat and full of eggs and even got sprayed by some milk if you squeezed too hard back then. Good luck to you guys and would love to join but have to work until 8 so won't be able to come and play today.....

If any of you more seasoned PCR guys wanna adjust where we're at when you get there just say the word, its our first time on this lake so we'll follow you.

Make sure you fillet by the skinning method and they are very easy to do and virtually no mess, guts etc. to deal with. Good to hear you guys had a good time. I hope you guys left me enough burbs in the lake for my Monday night burbfest. If you are not filleting by the skinning method there may be a link on the board to a good video, or if not let me know and I will dig into my stuff and find it for you. Makes life easier and much cleaner to work with.
As an addition if you go back there, try just a bit south after the boat launch as we have done better there than north.

Those burbs are a bitch to fillet. So fricken slimy! And that green scum that comes off them is GROSS! They're all going back down the hole tonight lol

If you do the skinning method you shouldn't have to deal with any scum or slime. We ended up with about 8 burbs. Took me about 15 min to skin them all, there were a few that surprisingly survived the trip very well back to Calgary so I had to spend a bit of extra time to humanely knock them out. I decided to fillet them all and once you get the rhythm it doesn't take long. Probably only took me 40mins to get the main fillets from them and an extra optional 40mins to butcher out the liver, clean up the belly meat and toss the guts/gills. Boy I can't wait to make some fish and chips and fish cakes.

Too bad you didn't come down to the bridge JTS, BearnDown was the one dialled in, I think he had three on at once at one point.

Was nice to match up faces to the names and see their setups. I definitely want to find out plans to build that foldable wooden shack, looks so warm. It would have been so nice for CV today, got skunked and was a bit too cold in the evening :(
