I drove to Alberta for my last few days on the ice this past week. While the weather was decent I wasn’t expecting all the snow we had with this mild winter. Up north we still had plenty of ice and snow. So much so that on most lakes our travel in the truck was limited by snow depth or flood water. Anyways with all the storms blowing through, full moon and spring upon us we were still able to find a few fish. This time 6 of us were fishing, so big crew and I think everyone had a good time. Here are some of the memorable moments in color.

Great pics! Some nice fish, congrats! Wish some of those bigger pike could have lived to fight another day. I find pike over 5 lbs to taste bad anyway. But hey, good weekend on the ice!

Yeah we let the big ones go and caught many more that were let go as well. We only kept about one third of our limit. The ones kept are in the 6 to 8 pound range and I find that they taste great. I've never tasted a bad pike through the ice before.

What can you do when the limit is greater than 63cm and the fish you catch are this size? The lakes up north are full of these pike. To me a 10+ pound is a big pike and deserves a release. Kind of wish they had Mandatory catch and release for fish over 35 inches. But this is how it works in the province.

Very Nice week indeed! Great pics. Dude if you're not somehow, someway, working in the fishing industry you've missed your calling young man! Outstanding season so far for you again. I've never even accidentally caught a large pike before as I've never been one to ever target them much. Maybe like 8lbs is my largest. The more pics I see of larger double digit Northerns and especially those over 20#/40", the more I think about wanting to catch one like that! Thanks for sharing! :scared0018:

Well thanks. I think I'll keep the day job for now, but maybe in the future being involved in the fishing industry would be interesting. I'm sure if I ever feel like retiring I'll just start guiding fishing or something like that instead. Seems like something I could see myself doing in the future.

For now I'll just enjoy the fishing and sharing what I can with others.

If you want to catch a pike over ten pounds it really isn't that difficult. Just PM me I'll help you out.

Thanks for the pic thread Brandon, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I appreciate when guys take the time to upload all the pics.

Haha.... i get asked that a lot. Even a Med student recently messaged me asking what I do that allows me so much time to fish since they'd like to do the same. I'm back to work now though.

Yeah... can you believe Yak fishermen actually ice fish? Open water is coming. It was great getting out with you and we will do it again sometime... maybe this summer when I'm out.
