Just when I thought bison hunting must be the biggest of big game hunting in N. America - I got this photo in my in-basket! Apparently from Canada's Arctic.

Looks like he's towing at least one float and the hunter is lining up a shot to attach another.

BTW - this is NOT a social/ethical comment on subsistence/traditional hunting.

I wonder how old the photograph is.Several years ago,I watched a program on CBC about the Inuit hunting whales. The government supplied a special harpoon gun to help them take the whale, but instead, they left it on shore, and set out in several boats,After throwing a few harpoons by hand, they surrounded the whale with boats, and began shooting at the whale with rifles. After one boat was hit by gunfire from another boat, the shooting was stopped before someone was killed or wounded.Eventually they hit the whale with enough bullets to kill it.They left the harpoon gun on shore and left with the whale.

The motor on that boat doesn't look very dated...

haha yea and a heck of a steering program too.

All kidding aside when i was hunting polar bear up there the outfitter inuit had some norwhale horns, and he was telling us about hunting the whales, there not nearly that large as the one in that picture there but he said she can get real hairy out there. he said the hard part is getting em to shore and the skinning. heres some whale bones we found along the shores out there, pretty awsome and heavy.

Holy shyte those are big bones! They must be vertebrae eh?

I find it kinda funny that hunters go up north to hunt all cammed up yet the locals seem to rarely ever wear camo.

hahhaha no matt the reason we wear camo up there is because that is what we have that is our warmest clothes.
Not too many of us from alberta have caribou skin pants and coats...but thats the reason, its not for the camo its for the warmth.

- and it still looks like skill and bravery is still involved today. Looks to me like that the guy in the bow is still hand- throwing a harpoon. No wussy high-powered, scope equipped, deck-mounted harpoon gun for these fellas.

Rest assured that there will be plenty of bullet holes in it by the time it is done.

Being from the Arctic I have had the pleasure of whaling for many summers. We hunt belugas. They max out around the 20 foot mark.

There is nothing I have expereiced (hunting wise) that comes close to the excitment when the boats go out on to the water. Some times it takes 10 mins to land on and sometimes it takes all day and night (the sun never goes down in the summer).

I may have some pics but I am weary of posting them. We are very cautious of releasing pics. The last thing we need is PETA going out there whale hugging and using them in attack ads.
