grass carp or alternative

does any one know where a guy can get some grass carp for the trout dug out. akenberry by leduc has a big wait list. or an alternative that would work too

Prussian carp are a huge problem south of Calgary now, I'm surprised that carp period would be allowed anywhere.

Grass carp have been listed federally as an invasive species. Gonna be pretty hard to get.

The carp are sterilized during the hatching process, they are sold purely for purpose of keeping down the grass and reeds in your ponds

So do they require any special approvals/permits or who confirms that they are sterile?

Last I checked on trout I needed to apply for permits just for that.

If I remember correctly, The carp all come from the same hatchery (associated with uni of leth?? I think she said the treat the eggs with uv radiaton (don't quote me on that part) resulting in infertile fish. Initially i questioned them with the same hesitation you guys have. Because what's preventing someone from dumping them into a river system but she seemed pretty confident in the process.

Any way trying to avoid die because what's the best of having a healthy clean pond in your yard if you can't sit and watch the fish

Grass carp are legal, they have to be triploid.

Smoky Trout Farm usually has... if they aren't already sold out or spoken for.

You need the same recreational fish culture license you need to stock trout to buy them.

Also... on the topic of dye... I find that dye is a must for most ponds; keeps the weeds and predators away. I just add small amounts until I find a happy medium of a blue tinge with about 10" visibility, then I can watch them feed and they are still somewhat protected. If you just dump it all in then its gets really dark.

Thanks, I broke down and added dye. Couldn't keep the herons out.
