Does anyone here have or have used the Hawkeye portable sonar before and what are your opinions? Keep in mind that this is a $60 unit and you shouldn't compare it to proper +$200 sonar units. Looks pretty decent for the price and portability.

Yes, not that exact unit but a similar one. You'll be very disappointed as it doesn't tell you structure or where the fish are. Basically if it sees a fish, one will just go across the screen from right to left and beep. Whoopie do, that doesn't really help anything. The only thing it was good for was depth finding. I agree it was cheap but not worth the money. It also stopped working after two seasons.

FYI: There is a canadian cabelas store as well, cabelas.ca. Get a real sonar and spend the extra cash.

Junk only thing they can do is tell the depth and even that is questionable at times.

For once, I have to agree with HPF as to them being junk. Mine also supposedly tells the temp and that's questional.

Thanks for the replies, guess I'll have to save up for something proper this summer. On that note, I'm assuming the little Humminbird Fishin' Buddy and SmartCast ones are pretty poor too?

I like the look of the 343c portable or the PiranhaMAX 190c portable but I'm not sure how bulky they are to lug around in a backpack nor how well they work. Anyone have either of these? I'll probably use it more on hard water as I don't have a good boat yet for summer.
