New to fishing

Not actually, I last fished as a teenager about 30 years back in India. Now I have a teenager and I want to teach him fishing. What is a half decent setup. Don't want to spend money on the first one. Are 40-50 dollars combo kits any good. Would be doing in a lake (lessard lake).

Hit up crappy tire or Walmart. Don't need to go to pricey to have fun catching fish. Tackle box, two rod/reels throw on some quality line like Berkeley fusion line and hit the lake. Make sure tackle box is equipped with the essentials to for your targeted species...then when fishing turns into catching the equipment list will grow...enjoy!

A $50 combo is fine. Just make sure you have an adequate pound test line for what you're planning on doing. Probably 6-8 lb test for trout and 10-14 lb test for pike. No need to spend $40 on a powerpro braided line either if you're just starting out. Cabelas brand mono is super cheap.

Grab a few jigs, some spoons, blue rapalas and you're good to go.

Definitely replace the fishing line on any new combo. Line they put on is complete trash. But their's plenty of decent combos at canadian tire or walmart that's get yea a decent start.

Great advice here. If you pick up a couple Len Thompson 5 of diamonds and some jigs and twister tails (white, pink, chartreuse) you guys should be set. If you and your son decide you like the sport, then you can start spending money on upgrading your gear and buying more expensive lures like suicks, rapalas, etc. There's a lot of really good fishermen on this forum so feel free to ask any questions you might have regarding techniques, setups, or the regulations.
