Anyone caught a Prussian Carp lately? I got one in a beaver trap two seasons ago , In a pond about two hundred meters from the Red Deer river. I was told by F&W they were an invasive species and were now in the Red Deer and surrounding creeks including farm dugouts ? Anyone caught one lately ? I saw another again a couple days ago in a side stream .

They are everywhere...kill them if you catch them, they are built like tanks and they can also live out of water for hours.

i keep hearing about them and caught them once and would love to catch more. one day they are there in huge numbers and the next day no ones home. don't know much about them.

Can someone fill me in on what makes these fish so appealing? The ones I've seen (max 6 inches) don't seem like the most exciting species to catch. I suppose it may be fun to have a new species on your list, but I just don't see the appeal.

Not trying to be confrontational, I'm genuinely curious.

if you see one, throw it in the bushes, or take it home

for me its always been i am a big pan fish person, and the appeal of a new species and trying to figure it out is a great challenge for me. when we did find them it was fish every 2nd or 3rd cast and throughout the whole day.

Buddy caught one on the RDR a couple weeks ago.

Rumour is that the Medicine River Wildlife Centre will take them for bird food.

Cheers

As member of the Airdrie Hunting & Fishing Association, I was out at DeWitt's Pond on Saturday checking the garbage cans and picking up trash. While walking around the pond, I talked to about 10 anglers. About half had caught Prussian Carp that day.

One couple caught a couple of small ones while I was talking to them. They were keeping them, so I asked how they cooked them in a palatable way (the 2 they caught were really small). The lady responded that she makes fish soup out of them for her 80 year old mother, who really liked it.

She said the main challenge was that they were full of small bones, but straining for soup overcame that problem. According to her, they are white fleshed and pretty tasty. I have read somewhere that they are pretty tasty deep fried. She thought that if they are big enough, they should be good that way.

So the idea is for a couple of us to test this out. If they are indeed tasty and not too hard to eat, we are going to look at getting some members and their kids out to lay waste to them and get a have a fish fry. If it works, hopefully we can make a little dent in the population and get a decent meal out it at the same time.

thats pretty much where i caught over a hundred with a buddy, but we went back days later and had a hard time finding them. i gave all mine away and now kinda regret it as i have never tried them before either and would like to try them for table fare.

What do you use for bait?

Tried a lot, canned corn was the ticket (thanks to the guy who was leaving and gave me a tip). Also had bites corn meal porridge, but was getting suckers one after another, so apparently it makes a difference. Other baits didn't work for me at all yesterday. Good luck.

Not sure how bad for the ecosystem they are going to be, but they are sure fun to catch

Anyone tried fly fishing for them? I tried a few nymphs on rdr but no luck. I was sight fishing a group of a dozen or so and couldn't get any interest.

It was not dewitts. I know, that given invasive nature of the fish, I should have no moral issues leading you to this pond, but I won't do it without an explicit permission from a person who gave location to me, general principals, sorry. And I, actually, do feel sorry.

I was at Dewitt's couple of weeks ago and did see two couples catching 2" prussian carp using dough and very small hooks #16-18? tied like pickerel rig under small slick bober.
One couple had one chabby about 10 " golden in color.
They also had thumb size brown trout in their pail.:mad0030: which is legal...

I just looked at the stocking report, didn't even know they started putting brown trout in Dewitt's. Haven't been there in a couple years myself.

ya two years now they stocked the browns. i gotta say they are much harder to catch then the rainbows. every time i am there not much trout is being caught.

ok so today i decided to go for some more prussian carp and i watched a bunch of youtube videos on do it yourself dough baits. so i mixed up a very small batch and hit the lake for them. big surprised today is that the homemade dough bait worked incredibly well........well at least for the trout. lol oh my god i couldn't keep them off like what the hell??? . back to the drawing board i guess.

look on amazon at small halibut pellets they also like small boilies if you want the bigger fish a 15mm bottom bait with a led weight and a hair rig or they love maggots

I know back home (England) they respond on the fly to imitation floating white bread on the fly

yeah but for fun wise they are incredibly abundant and hit throughout the entire day. all ranged in size from 4" - 6". but don't get me wrong there are some huge ones in there, as i watched a few of the asians pull some out in the 12"+ range but they don't get the constant hits like i did. i wasn't crazy about waiting all day for the odd big fish i'd rather catch lots of small guys in the whole day

im the opposite lol at home I go for 72 hours on occasion and catch maybe 1 or 2 but 20lb or more my local water holds 50lb + sized fish lol but I really want a nice one hear

i hear ya i do too but they are too new of a species for me, don't know much about them. been targeting them a bit to try and figure them out, so far i am good a the little ones but not the big ones even though my buddy has been averaging some decent size ones in the 12' + range

try using carp specific bait like boilies throw about 20 freebies on the spot you want to fish put your rig on top and wait lol if you google hair rigs that's the simplest rig for them, if its hot they will also take bread floating on the surface.

I don't understand why not as its only a type of leasure fishing
how do u typacly fish if you don't mind me asking as I don't want to go and fish my methods from home and end up breaking the rules

its hard to say because there is a bunch of rules that are allowed else where but is not allowed here in alberta. like for example chumming, gaffing a fish with a gaff, culling a fish these are not allowed just to name a few. if i had to guess i would say it may give an unfair advantage to the angler vs the fish?? if you are not sure of certain fishing methods that you are use to just call the local fish and wildlife office and ask. i do it all the time just make sure you remember who you spoke with date and time for your own reference if anything happens.

most likely, cause i have been hearing reports of the prussian carp in various sloughs that don't normally hold fish. at first i thought the 2013 floods but alot of these lakes and ponds are no where near the flood zone. who knows.

Too bad these Prussian Carp aren't Asian Carp instead! I'd say Asians would be a whole lot more fun? 30 lbs instead of 30 grams!

I'll probably get yelled at now.

well for me i find it alot of fun to catch these no matter what size. aren't asian carps vegetarians? hmm using a chunk of salad for bait lol or do that bow fishing for them when fly out of the water. those are some cool videos on youtube.
