The names are different but they are the same fish, world record is in the 48> 50 lb range, mine was only 20 lbs or so, but it damm near beat my legs off after we got it in the Panga, didn't know who's blood belonged to who, the fish or me. anyway anybody ever fish these guys, and if you did how about sharing your stories and pictures.
In my life i have fished, cod, flounder, tommy cod, trout, smelt, perch, brown trout, brookies, barbut, skate, pickerel, chain pickerel, slew sharks, stripers ( sea bass) as well as small mouth bass and red snapper.
I am now able to fish for free and don't seem to have time to anymore.
funny how retirement finds more work than pre retirement did.
anyway good posting guys.....have a good day....mooseburger

p.s. my only wish as far as fishing goes is to fish for salmon in British Columbia, havn't done that yet, well maybe someday, the Good Lord willing.:)

ya i spent alot of years living in florida and im sure ive caught a ton of species including bull dolphin....alot of people use dorado or mahi mahi as the name because if you say bull dolphin...alot of people tink you killed flipper..we caught alot of them in the 20-40 pound range and to me they are the best tasting fish next to gator trout or mostly known as sea trout,i remember geting into pods of them and casting to them with spinning gear and as long as you dont pull the first one out of the water right away the group will stay around so when you hook one you keep it in the water till the next person hooks one and so on and nothing fights like a salt water fish....eveb a small jack crevale puts up a heck of a battle...some fish i caught there were deep sea were hammer heads, spinner sharks, black tip and white tip sharks, kings, bonita, wahoo, goliath grouper and the list goes on even caught a stonefish one time wreck fishing..inland salt water sea trout, red fish,snook,tarpon...differnt puffer species, blue fish, lady fish and lots of small jacks....nice thing about fishing down there is you dont know what you have till you get it to the boat....i remember one time i hooked a big king on heavy spinning gear casting for dolphin and i must of faught him for thenty min or so and i finally got him close to the boat so we could see him and about the same time a nine foot hammer head shark came up and bit him in half just in front of the dorsal fin...the piece i ad left weighed 40 pounds....****ed me of after that battle....

Have caught quite a few on the trips we have been on. We were down in Panama last year, we couldn't hardly keep them off the hook.

Caught some nice one's in Costa Rica and a buddy of mine caught the biggest one I have seen when we were down in Puerto Vallarta last year.
The fish was probably 50 lbs, he gave the little Mexican deck hand a bit of beating when we got him in the boat.

If you can find logs or any debris floating in the water it's usually a pretty good spot to try. The debris attracts the bait and the Dorado follow.

The one day we were out we found a mess of tangled up rope with a couple floats tied to it. We trolled around it at first and caught a few, then we decided to try casting some plugs to it. It was one after another, no big ones but lots of fun on light spinning gear.

I agree they have to be one of the BEST tasting fish I have had.

Here's a few pics, the 1st pic is of the big one my buddy caught in Vallarta,
2nd is the biggest one I have caught in Costa Rica.

Very nice.

I tried for Dorado in Maui but only caught Ono... or called wahoo... Greatest tasting shashimi!

Anyways...Dorado is also the name for a salmonid living in Argentina... Cool fish and found with piranha. http://www.flyfishingpatagonia.com/dorado.html

Another dream trip!

Cheers
