We did a little pot hole tour yesterday. We first headed out with intentions of going to Reeser but when we got to the road the gate was locked and it was a no go. So after a lengthy discussion we decided to head north to a little out of the way pot hole that we heard about a while back. We just weren't in the mood for anymore Perch or Pike or Walleye fishing but were in the mood for something different. So off we headed on an hour and a half drive to the Res.

Upon reaching our destination I must say the first impressions were not all that good. We were quite surprised at how small the little reservoir was. But there were a surprising amount of shacks on the little piece of water so we figured it can't be that bad if it has that kind of attention being paid to it.

So we picked a spot and got a couple holes drilled, set up the tent and gave it a go. It wasn't 2 min after the first hook was in the water that we had some action and the first Rainbow on the ice. I must say that the action on the Res was pretty much steady all the time. We did have a lot of hits and misses they were caji little buggers but over about 4 hrs we manged 17 fish on the ice. The fish were all cookie cutter of course with a couple of the the larger ones coming in at just over a pound and the rest in the 3/4 pound range. Of course this is just my guess we never bothered to way any of the little buggers as they were all released back as soon as possible. With the Res being so small I doubt it would take very long to fish it out if people were to get greedy and take to many out.

Here are a few pics of the day..

And finally,, there's nothing like a little warmed up left over chili to get the chill out.

If I was a betting man I know of only one small res in the range you drove.
Used to spend a fair bit of time there in the summer fishing.
Anywhere near AV????

Yes I was just mentioning that Bullshead is a great fishery. I have spent many a hr on Spruce Coulee Reservoir that place will be the death of me. I just cant seem to get fish out of it. Is it just me or does everyone have bad luck there. I know the shimp % is huge in there. So I blame them rather than myself.

my apologies for misinterpreting your reply. Bullshead is definitely a fishery worthy of the trip. The rest of the lakes in that area are also nice little gems as you mention.

Tight Lines!

I wish they could do something different with Spruce as it seems to me to be an underutilized fishery.
Not only that but it is in general just a bad fishery as in impossible to catch anything, and if you do there is no size!
I spend a ton of time in Cypress Hills and you rarely see anyone on the lake, you would think that would make for better fishing but it does'nt.
The walleye in the lake a few years ago probably had an effect on the lake but I don't know if any of them are left.
Don't know what the answer is but what's happening out there does not seem to be working,at least for me and I'd bet most people who fish it would agree......

I guess while we are on the topic Cavan Lake from what I hear may be dead.
Not heard of anybody catching anything and the water is said to be pretty smelly.
Anybody have some 1st hand knowledge of Cavan Lake?
So Spruce sucks,Reesor was drained and had lots of fish die, trout fishing around here ain't what it used to be!!!
Since pike/walleye/perch are closing up I plan on hitting the trout lakes....
Heck how's Michelle been too?

Looks like Cavan is done. They can not leave enough water in it to justify anymore stocking, so the plans are not to stock it anymore...if water levels go up, more fish will likely be added but I can't see the water levels changing.

The lakes in the Park (Spruce and Reesor) are tough to get anything done on due to resistance from the powers that be in the park. There was a push to drain Reesor even further this fall to kill all the suckers, but they refused due to the aesthetics...big mistake in my opinion. Until the suckers are gone, Ressor will always be a waste. Sadly the park doesn't seem to want to attract fisherman. Tough to get changes on Spruce for the same reason.
