Probably around 20 years old. Does seem like a shame to keep such a beautiful fish. Great catch though.

Maybe one day they'll put slot sizes in so eaters can keep a few quality fish but leave the big fish to breed.

That's a great fish and the kid has a right to be proud. But I really wish the regs stated that these big egg machines had to be released after a few photos. I used to catch pike almost every ice-fishing trip to Sylvan, now it's been almost a decade since I've even hooked one. Lots of fishing pressure there, the people-in-charge need to tweek the regs to protect what's left.

As far as keeping the fish ...if god didn't want us to eat fish he wouldn't have made them out of meat. A young man feels good when he can contribute to the family table. That's how they learn to become providers.

Keeping fish raises the question.... which is better ecologically? To catch and keep more smaller fish or less big fish? And that's for a whole other thread.

There's bigger Pike in Sylvan than this, they do well here and grow fast/big, the kid will never-ever forget this for the rest of his life.

I'd hate to be that kid right now, I hope he's not reading this forum. He caught it, it's an achievement that I'm sure he's proud of, and if he decided to keep it when it's legal to do so, then so be it.

Not blaming the kid at all. At his age I would definitely have kept it myself. The regs allow him to keep it and he's 100% justified in doing so. Just my personal opinion that I'd like to see regs changed so that pike above a certain size (10 lbs?) should be released from heavily fished waters. Until or unless that happens, harvest what you like (above 63 cm).

To the guy who hasn't caught a pike at Sylvan for 10 years, it's a heavily fished location, change what you're doing, they are in there.


Pike aren't my main quarry there. I usually go for winter whitefish in the tent, and set up a tip-up with a smelt or anchovy to see what's interested in that. Used to often bring me in a pike but it's been almost a decade since I've caught a pike there on a tip up. Burbot yes, but no pike. That's why I think the lake has become over-fished. Whites tend to be much smaller now too.

For monster Sylvan Lake - Pike you need to find the spot-on-the-spot, have the appropriate gear, patience and of course ... some skill and if you can get some of these, (8-10" Suckers) it will increase your success.

Jet, I think you are abusing the stats there, lol.

Maybe 14% of fish overall are kept, and C&R has about a 15% mortality rate. But saying that this indicates they are no different is just plain wrong, it's comparing apples and oranges.

For "kept fish" the mortality rate is 100%. With C&R it is about 15%. No "kept fish" will ever live to reproduce another day. 85% of C&R fish will.

Valid point (about how C&R) can make fish harder to catch, even on non-C&R lakes). I hadn't thought of it in those terms.

My question is, how much of this is jealousy that the kid caught a large fish, the belief that it was the last large fish in there because that person hasn't caught one recently and C&R being used to justify that position?

Silent killing is easier on the conscious if you don't see the effect.

My thoughts are that some people are keeping the trophies to say "I killed it so no one else can". Or look at what i can do, I don't know why anyone would think a 30-35 year old fish would taste better than a 10 year old one but I certainly don't blame a 13 year old for wanting to keep his first monster. He didn't break any rules ... I just wish the rules were different.

I also will admit that seeing a large fish that has been kept, knowing I will never catch that fish makes me a little envious. I still don't blame the kid or the people he was fishing with I just think the rules should say to let the big ones live and reproduce to make more that will be good for the pan.

I don't let him read posts on AO for good reason , everyone is entitled to their opinion so be it. If it matters, that whole experience is all he talks about and will remember for the rest of his life. The fish was taken legally and he doesn't regret harvesting his trophy. (although he didn't know it was considered trophy at the time) Best of all it was one of the best tasting and fed many people :)

When I was his son's age ... my Grandpa Klaiber took me to many reservoirs near by and close to the hat .... that was about 1962 to 1967 ...

The fish that was caught out of sylvan ... were the sizes we put back ... because it was considered small ...

But we still came back to my Grandpa's house with wash tubs full of large pike and cleaned for two hours ... back then cutted ... scaled ... and steaked ... I ate pike ... lots of pike ... I prefer it over walleye

I am now 60 and have never repeated those sizes around central alberta ... and as a kid I still think back to the reservoirs and all those monster pike I still get excited about ....

So with a collected sigh ... lets move on:argue2: .... and go out and catch ... picture and release your next trophy out of sylvan:) ... and post for us all to enjoy :)
