Looks like you guys had fun! Is that at the twin valley dam, if it is i hooked a couple pike right at that spot where you guys fished, but in late fall, and nothing bigger then what you guys/girls had there.

All the pike i caught there had no teeth, did you notice this by any chance?

Looks good guy's!! I have the same boots you are wearing FG. The Texans down here thought I was insane for wearing such a "stupid looking water shoe"!!:lol::lol:
Some of the warmest boots I have ever owned!:D:D

These were from Travers... I have never in my life seen a pike with no teeth, kinda weird though, some people think they lose their teeth but I am yet to see it.

Sweet pictures guys. I would love to join up with anyone heading out this coming Saturday for a day of ice fishing.

By the way, I have always wanted to learn how to catch those whitefish through the ice, what are the chances one of you could share the technique and possibly a lake I cold try for them at? It would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know if you are all heading out somewhere this weekend.

Great photos, cheers.

Just wondering, was the rock kept or was it safely released back to it's waters? Nice fish too!

Hey Ducky, yes the rock was returned safely to help ensure the future generations will still have the great rock fishing we have today!

The guy wanted to have the rock mounted...but out of respect for happy perch fisher, we convinced him to let her go...she was obviously heavy with eggs.

Thanks!! Didn't hand line the white, but this past weekend was my first time catching a white, first time catching a ling, and first time hand lining a fish (pike). I still can't stop grinning. :D

I bet!! That's a hell of a start of the whitefish! Pike on a tip-up? Sure is fun watching those flags fly and spindals spinning:D

Lol the bigest pike I ever caught through the ice I caught on a handline (never even used a real rod through the ice untill a couple winters ago) It was one of those sticks with the ends notched and the line wrapped end to end so I couldnt feed line very well. Got my hands all cut up from the line and on one run I ended up sticking my arm down the hole to try and give him more line, finaly got him though.

Mish

Handlining is fun, I'm very tempted to drop two tip ups instead of a tip up and a rod next time I'm out...it's so fun to haul them in! Although, it's a little scarier to have that giant mouth coming at your hands instead of a rod tip.

Cal

Untill I moved up to slave I caught most of my pike on tipups. They usualy out fished my handline anyways. I used to put bells on them and then I could study, read, shoot my bow, light a fire etc... In slave for some reason they dont seem to hit the tipups... ever! When I go to other lakes I still catch fish on them but in two years I think I've caught one small pike out of slave on a tipup and very few bites as well.

Mish

That's weird, people seem to swear by tip ups. Maybe the fish of Slave Lake are smarter.

Cal
03-19-2009, 09:39 AM
I dunno what it is, when I first got here I thought it was weird that nobody used them, now I see why. Maby if I got some of those ones that jig the bait for you they might work.

Mish
03-19-2009, 09:41 AM
Always worth a try. Are you jigging your rod?

Cal
03-19-2009, 09:59 AM
Yeah, depending on the bait I jig it alot or a little. most of the pike I catch on an unbaited ratling rapala jigged pretty agressively between pauses. If I'm using a baited jig or a spoon I dont move it as much but still more action than my tip up. One thing I used to do a few years back was freez a regular fishing rod into the slush and hanging a big bobber halfway between the rod tip and the ice so that the wind would blow the bobber around, I guess I could see if that works, after lunch I'll give it a shot, may as well make the most of the economy going down the crapper eh?

Mish
03-19-2009, 10:14 AM
Sounds like a jigging tip up might do the trick then! Hey, you're putting food on the table and you're fishing. Could be worse things :)

Cal

Lol :lol:If youve gotta be out of work than slave lake is the place to be.

Mish
03-20-2009, 10:55 AM
Did you try it with a slip bobber?

Cal
03-20-2009, 08:01 PM
No I use a big round plastic bobber so that it catches lots of wind and just hand line the fish up. If you mean did I try my bobber yesterday no... I was driving out onto the lake and got stuck in a drift, while I was digging my truck out my dog got out of my truck and decided to go for a run. He then decided that instead of coming back he would run as far away from the plowed road as he could. So I ended up walking like a kilometer towards a black speck out in the snow that I was assuming was my dog... yup it was my dog, sleeping in the snow. Now he knew he was in trouble so he got up and booked it even farther away. I had to go get my wife who was working to come out and go get him because he likes her better than me. Did no fishing whatsoever, just some digging and a whole lot of walking, and ****ed my wife off as well:mad2:

Sounds like it might be time to leave that dog at home with the wife and get one that enjoys fishing :)
