Can this disease be in other species of fish or just in trout (salmo)? The Wife and I saw chubs with a black tails in two different water bodies, swimming weird.Looked at the pics. of infected fish from BNP/Johnstone Lake news story.Looks the same.YIKES. Both lakes are stocked pounds. Both in Central Alberta.Does anyone know who or were the local Fish Biologist are located?Would like to give a heads up to them.

Based on any information I've seen this parasite has only been found in Salmonids (Trout, Salmon and Char). It also seems to affect certain species more aggressively (like rainbows and brookies) while it has very little (or far less of an) effect on browns.

Your local SRD office can put you in tough with your local Biologist.

It's likely the chub you noticed had some other form of parasite/condition. There are some conditions that attack spinal and nerve development in other species that also looks quite a bit like whirling disease (making fish swim in spirals).
