Anybody know where to get Hornady die parts in Edmonton area. Other types may work as long as they are threaded the same.
Looking for a 7mm tapered expander button to use in a sizing up operation that I want to do in steps.

The early Hornady tapered expanders like you pictured, were sold individually with a smooth rod (with deprime pin) for use in a friction / collet nut (# 396335) threaded into the top of the die body. They were intended to slip before the pin breaks. Later the smooth collet nut was changed to a type (# 398731) that used a ribbed spindle rod # 398567 (with deprime pin), current Zip spindle rifle kit (398731, 398567 & 2x 390222 deprime pins) available as # 43400.

Hornady also sells an expander mounting rod # 390969 that is threaded for use in an RCBS die. IMHO, the Hornady tapered expanders are much better than the RCBS expander button design. I use my tapered expanders with RCBS threaded rods in a (Lyman) universal de-priming die, but I suspect that an RCBS universal de-prime die or any larger die would also work. They work very well for expanding case necks to form false shoulders for fire-forming using the COW method.

The several expanders I have are not super hard, and can be reduced or polished by hand (to adjust neck tension etc) using fine # 400-600 abrasive paper and a drill press.

Hornady sent me several rods N/C after request, but I suspect they would be happier to sell (AFAIK US$3 ea) or supply with tapered expanders.
I also suspect you will get much better availability and service by ordering direct from Hornady vs any LGS.

Good Luck, YMMV.

If I can't find one, I will look for an old FL or NK die that someone wants to sell. I can probably get by with using a 6.5 as I step up from 6mm to 30 cal. I just think there would be less chance of inadvertently "bending" a neck with that extra step.

I suspect that ordering any desired expanders and threaded RCBS adapter rods direct from Hornady will be a LOT cheaper and faster.

Good Luck, YMMV.

Jim,
Have you checked at P-D? They have quite a good selection of Hornady dies, parts etc.

Didn't see any but I should have checked with the chap in the scope mount corner. Probably only going to find a "take off" from a damaged or unwanted sizer die. Of course, I gave all my 7mm stuff away when I decided to focus on 6.5 years ago. Sinclair sells the tapered Redding button and I forgot to put it on an order earlier this week. "Oldtimers" setting in I guess:)
