It was too cold to pump concrete today, so I decided to go ice fishing for the first time instead.

Made my rod out of old bamboo stick, couple of screws, tape and rubber band I had laying around in the garage. I put on pretty much everything I can manage and still be able to move. Pry bar, small axe, chair, worms, some hot tea and energy bar. Pack everything to the car and off I go to Salter's lake.

I picked my spot(thanks to my boss for advice), cut my hole, put a worm on the hook and in to the water. I let it go all the way to the bottom than back it out a foot or so. 2 minutes later jerk, jerk, pull and I have my first ever trout :)

What a great day off!

Andy

Nothing wrong with that fish for a first one.

Not sure what I am more impressed with, the trout....or your ingenuity!

Nice action.

Was there any open water spots or anything else to make the aerator locations obvious?

Love the old school approach. That's how we used to do it every weekend when I was a kid!

Awesome! well earned fish, I get hungry just looking at the picture! Great to see somebody just get out there and actually fish instead of arguing about technique well sitting at home.
Well done.

It took me many years to catch a trout that big! Then again I wouldn't go out side in this weather. You deserve it!

I want to try it on Thursday. Will the ice be safe enough? I am thinking to try hermitage pond.

Congrats on your adventure. Surprised you didn't eat that fish raw. Every time you go out again, you will add some small refinement till your just like the rest of us, who are prepared for everything, then get skunked.

Stick to the basics.

Thank you all!

The fish tasted really good. But next time I wont probably push it like this. It was -18, realfeel -32. Ive lasted for two hours. After that my toes were numb for next 1.5 hour :)))

The areator is kind of like a fountain so there is no ice around it.

At my spot the ice was probably 4-6"
