My husband and I were icefishing and we seen what we thought was a deer on the ice but moving weirdly. So we drive up to it and the deer turns out to be a young cow caribou. She wouldn't let us get too close but it was a caribou. A wild one with no ear tags. She was healthy and everything, what a joy to see!!!

You sure they were not Reindeer? Did one have a red nose?:);)

I remember passing a farm that had fenced caribou/reindeer about 40 or 50 miles SW of Gull lake. Could be a farmed animal.

The nearest wild caribou would be over 500km away. I'm thinking you must have seen an elk or an escaped one from sort of zoo or breeding program.

Hahaha I was waiting for this, but no joke! I phoned Fish and Wildlife here in Red Deer. We were both shocked but hubs has hunted them before up north while guiding. She had the trot. Seen her by a large shack on brownlow's further out. I did take pics ( although at a distance as she was keeping away from the car). I'm certain other people seen the "deer" on the lake. I
have a pic and will post later, have to take the kid out for a haircut now.

That was my thought too but she had no ear tags and was spooky. Wouldn't it be awesome if she is a wildie?

Quite a few years back maybe in the 70's there was a season on Caribou west of Gull over by the trunk road. Could still be some around they do migrate a long long ways.

Back in the 70"s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HOLY CRAP I AM GETTING OLD:sHa_sarcasticlol:

Seeing a caribou at Gull is surprising, but seeing a spotted one is Wondrous!!!!

So here's the pic. It was walking west at Brownlow's. You can see the stub tail and white butt. I thought at first it was a whitetail missing his tail but it wasn't. It also had little antlers and a square face. It was a young female apparently according to the hubbie. We are still puzzled as to why it was there. Sorry about the pic quality but it was for sure a caribou.

Can't tell from pic, but it would sure be neat if it was a Caribou. Perhaps there will be more sightings.
Kind of sad to think it is all by itself.

We were camping at Pierre Grey's PP in Sept and I saw one 3 days in a row around the same area by one of the lakes. It was a big bull with the rack. Beautiful beast! I felt very lucky to have seen one! :)

That's awesome!
The only thing I worry about that some idiot will think she is a deer, kills her and after realizing the mistake, leave her there to rot...

I am not trying to start anything here but when I saw the picture I thought whitetail. Seen a few whitetails in my day without the big tail plus seems wrong body color and hooves seem small for a caribou. I am not saying it is not one, just my initial thoughts.

Yeah I can appreciate what you say, and unfortunately the pic was crappy. Hubs watched it thru his binos and seen the animal clearly. He couldn't believe it but there it was.It had a square looking face, little antlers and a different gait and trot different than a deer.

One of my buddies took a pic of an Antelope outside his house on the outskirts of Fort Sask last year. Animals travel for sure. Would love to see one of those in the wild.
