Can anyone tell me where the Elk herd is in WMU 522

I traveled all the TWP and RR roads south of Highway 49 looking for Elk today and didn't see any sign. Anyone out there that can fill me in on where they are located would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I can tell by your first post that you are going to benefit a lot of conversations here.

They'll be along river banks feeding on south facing slopes. Not enough snow to push the out and lots of food in the bush.

There is no better zone for elk than 522, IMO. But there is no way you would find any driving around, especially TWP and RR roads.

Look at the map and find a way to get to public land, get out of the truck and start walking/hunting. Follow the the signs and you have a good chance of succeeding. It will probably take more than one day though.

You won't see any just driving around, there isn't enough snow to keep them feeding out late in the mornings. There's lots of crown, walking down cutlines and see where they are going from feed or to bed. If they are feeding in a specific field and there's lots of sign, get permission and wait it out. Or walk in slowly and quietly during the day. It also won't hurt to use a cow call if you're walking in. I have an acreage in 522, but I found the elk the hard way, I expect others to do the same.

Elk move around in response to hunting pressure, wouldn't bet my money on one sighting somewhere. Time to scout is before the season.

Talk to the fish and game warden for the area and also any farmers you come across. We've been up the past 2 years and have had good luck with that. Like some of the guys are saying if there isn't much snow you won't find them in the fields but last year we were successful near the river. Good luck.

Hate late season elk. Find the DEEPEST, MEANEST coulee or creek draw, within a mile of the feed field and go along the top looking down. When you find the travel corridors, it will be very obvious. Its what they take to go up and down to the feed field.

They could come out 2 hours after dark and go back in 2 hours before light, and you will never catch them on the field.

Set up back from the fields say 500 - 1000 yards, and go DOWN WIND of the trail, cut line, old road allowance, and you will catch them coming and going. Once they are in the bush it can take hours for them to come and go to the bedding area.

This approach is a lot easier than trying to get something out from the bottom of one of those hellish draws.

I would personally bet on NE, Wildland Provincial Park in particular. Like I mentioned earlier, do not expect to find anything driving around though. You could, but very unlikely.

Buddy was telling me problem they had there, last year, was the elk liked to hang out in the middle of an open section. view all around and no way to get close enough for a shot.

there is a heard in NW corner of the small field bordering the huge stand of pines and spruce trees
just 33 miles west of 1-26-59-19 E6th
or just around the next corner half way through the hubs of Heck with that noise get out and hunt and look for them just every one else does

I've always enjoyed my late season elk hunt helping each other out is a must for this hunt. Go talk to the Hutterites near the birch hills take the gravel road off range road 12 look for elk crossing from the fields back to bedding areas and make a plan save me an elk I still have a tag.
