Hey all just wondering I'm having a problem with pulling the hook on quick strike rigs. Losing too many fish. Watching the on the marcum and I can see the hook is in the mouth and I set it and it seems like they only stay hooked for a few seconds before throwing the hook, thanks for.any input

ditch the quick strike rigs altogether. I borrowed reeljunkies method, I use a single size 4/0 circle hook, much as I used to hate them, they have been doing awesome for me since I gave them, another shot. I use a heavy fluoro leader, tied directly to the hook. Ive been hooking my herring upside down just barely through the belly so the hook tears out easily. lose a few more to smaller fish but if you are watching on the camera you can usually take it away from them. you have to let the fish run til it eats the herring, you can usually feel them chewing on it through the line, then just close your bail and hold on tight! remember not to yank to set the hook ! thats tough to do sometimes, I learned from experience :) especially when you watch an 8 pound walleye spit the bait 4 times til it finally swims off with it and you get her. (on a smelt)
havent hooked up a treble yet this winter and no regrets. had a great week, 3- hogs all on a single circle hook and lots of smaller ones as well. great way to finish off the year!:sHa_shakeshout:

Wayne,

Can you post a pic of what the bait looks like rigged up with that single hook?

Thanks.

not much to see which is the whole point of it :bad_boys_20: no snaps, swivels, wire leaders, nothing to put the fish off. doesnt mean it will take the bait but the less obvious its not natural the better. I like to lay the tail just on top of the bottom, weeds, whatever is down there so it looks naturally dead and hook it more towards the front so the head is up and give the fish a better grab around the hook. they seem to like grabbing the prey around the middle so they can kill it before turning it and swallowing head first. doesnt mean it will work every time but Im sure happy with the results Im getting this season! havent had one fish deep hooked either all have been on the outside of the mouth with the circle hook. just resist the temptation to give it a yank when they pick it up! gives you time to get the other line and the camera out before they get tangled too. :angry3: with the bait lightly hooked it will come out easy and stick into the fish much easier

I'm glad I found this post -- definitely going to give this a try. Maybe this is a basic question, but I don't have a camera... you're not adding any weight? Just basically just letting the herring drift to the bottom (whether it be weeds, sand, etc) and that's it?

Yes I've been fishing in 12 feet and you can position the bait by sight too. Or just let it hit bottom and take the weight off.
