My windlass tip up has always produced well.

I run a combo of polar therm (round hole covering and insulated) and windlass. Then I have recently purchased a couple jawjackers that I am playing with. I just really like the Polars because they don't freeze up. Only issue is with the 10" auger I added a couple tabs to the outside diameter to keep them from fully floating in the hole.

I was using Frabil(or any other brands) Tip Up for a few seasons, they work fine and they are cheap, you can get one like for 10-15 dollars.
Like this kind

But after I built my own tips ups about a month ago, I only use them. Nothing brings more satisfaction then DIY espessialy if it works.
And I must admit this kind of a rig, works pretty good!

2L pop bottle is a blast when you are fishing with kids. Other than that my favorite hands down is the jaw jacker.

Angler you don't find the line freezes up on the spool of your DIY tip up?

I'll second the effectivity of Anglers' set up. The area of ice surrounding the line when it enters the water is so small when to compared to the force exerted by a pikes' bit that it doesn't matter. The actual spool doesn't come in contact with water, hence it can't freeze.

After a pike peels 50 feet of line off the spool and you wind it back on it'll be wet. It's the drawback of not having a spool in the water imo.

Same thing with the windlass tip ups. I like them and use them but the frozen spools of line aggravate me.

It's a nice job done on the tip up angler, I like DIY projects as well.

I didn't use it yet at extreme cold temperatures, but at minus 10 it worked just fine. After you put wet line back, it does freeze a little bit, but still works. I think because the reel itself is quite large and it spins so easy I don't have issues.

I've been having pretty good luck with quick strike rigs and smelt on my jaw jacker. I set the tension on the trigger pretty tight so the fish has to really have a hold of it. No more deep hooks and it's awesome for the little kids because they don't have to hand line.
