Thawing out a Frozen Deer

I suspect we've all had to deal with trying to thaw out a frozen deer to skin it and cut it up at one time or another. My Dad had the solution...just bring them in the house next to the wood stove. My mother was a Saint...

i had to do this after leaving the army base in wainwright. I was in such a rush to move on to the next kill that i gutted my deer and threw it in the back of the truck... didnt take long for the -40 to freeze it.

I could have started the gas heater up in the garage but i wanted to freak the wife out by bringing the deer inside instead.

The wifes mother wanted to learn how to skin it so we did it together.

I've had to thaw deer in the kitchen so I could butcher them.

I remember as a kid going to my uncles place in the winter and he would have all different kinds of animal hides drying in the house near the stove. It was always exciting going to visit and see what he had going on.

When dad trapped they always had to dry the hides in the house it was the only practical way to do it. It wasn't that long ago having a heated garage or shop was a major luxury. I casually mentioned to the wife it would be nice to thaw coyotes in the basement so I didn't have to deal with doing it in my uninsulated garage but that was a no go lol. I don't think I would have done it anyway, it was more of a test for her.

Ha!!! I hear you. We had linoleum for all of our flooring when I was a kid....it was before carpet was in style.

Dragged a deer in to the mud room about over 10 years ago. Wife wasn't happy. It wasn't a enjoyable experience. (Skinning a frozen deer or doing it on a slippery lineolum floor 8-). Now my skinning and processing is bases on weather over anything else.

mine go to the bathroom tub ..no garage either but skinned in bush

then a day later ...piece by piece come to the cutting board

just make sure everyone has a bath/shower before ..lmao

I can't say that I've ever brought a deer into the house to thaw. I know better, after trying to wash a bloody coyote pelt in the washing machine....:thinking-006:

I scanned this from one of Larry Benoit books I have.... He was arguably the best deer hunter in North America. For those who aren't familiar with him, he was a tracker. Do a search on him and you'll find a lot of info on him and his sons....
