just a little word of advice. I have had a big buddy heater for a couple years now and it was having issues staying lit so I purchased a filter for it when using the 20lb tanks, should have done it a while ago. I went fishing yesterday with it and after a few minutes of it being lit it basicly exploded! and flames were shooting out of the top where the fan vents are, I quickly turned off the tank and jumped out the door of my shelter and it died off. I checked the filter after and it was a little loose so I'm guessing it was slowly leaking out. no serious damage just some synged hair and some dirty underware! now I will always check the conections before using it!

Well thats scary.....
Have owned one for about 6 years and have used it hard all ice fishing seasons. I have always used it with 20lb tanks and have never had a filter or a problem.

Glad to hear your OK and no tent damage even by the sounds of it!

I've got an email request in to Mr. Heater to answer the question of whether a filter is required when using the Big Buddy 12' quick connect hose with regulator...

I was under the impression that it wasn't required and the product description for the hose I purchased on the Cabela website indicates this as well. :confused0024:

I'll update this post once I hear back from Mr. Heater! :happy0034:

If you have the quick connect hose it doesnt require the filter.:)

Thanks for the heads up. I have a small Mr. Heater, it's the one with the small 1lb tanks, the portable little buddy, or something like that. I've always had a bit of a propane phobia. Are there any alternatives?

Naphtha or white gas heater have been used in tents for years

Re: filters
If you shut off the tank valve and let the heater burn out no filter is required but if you shut off the heater then the tank it leave gas inside the hose and oil separates from the gas clogging the orifice and gumming up the gas valve over time.

So that's what those filters are for I've always wondered.
