Why would you use 16 lb test for whitefish? Were you fishing for pike?

Way to go. Never forget your pike out of fickle and that bloody brookie that rivals the ones in the nipigon to this day. Wish you would have got the world record on that one. Once in many lifetimes does an angler even see a fish of that caliber. Much less get the bugger in the boat in alberta. Safest alberta record next to the 12 lb lake white. Nice work Mr. Robson. Keep at er.

Why would you use 16 lb test for whitefish? Were you fishing for pike?

Because if you look up the records, for line class weights, there are no entries for certain species, for certain line weights.

There is also categories for ice fishing and open water with no entries.

So ..... the very first entry, even a small to average fish, would be listed as the world record until someone enters a larger (heavier) one.

I think most people would be surprised how many of these line classes/species don't have an entry, or, alternately, have a relatively average fish entered and listed as the current world record.

This is, of course, is not meant to deplete, or in any way reduce, the efforts of the OP (David), who holds a number world records for some pretty amazing fish.

A 5lb White is a great fish - but I'm sure many fisherman have caught a 5lb (or better) white fish, on a line weight that would have qualified them as the world record holder, but didn't know, and ate it instead !!!

Again, David puts his time in, and we can clearly see his is truly a master angler deserving of his records. This old guy can catch some meat ! I'm confident very few anglers catch the quantity or quality of fish David and the old boys put in the boat (or on the ice) regularly.

Congrats again David !!!!

Congrats Speckles. You deserve this record. There never was a doubt in my mind that you are probably the most knowledgeable and proficient Whitefish angler in Alberta. This world record helps attest to that

Great rule change...no sport in catching a light fish on such heavy tackle just for a "record"

Wow they no longer recognize quite a few species of fish

ohh well .. I have been in IGFA book 3 times ..got that yesterday too!

Too bad my 29 1/2 " .. 12# 13 oz Brook Trout never was recognized in their book

Agree as well, it can go the other way too.. heavy fish on too light of tackle is just exhausting the fish to death.
