Tip up line

Haven't used a tip up before, however, this weekend we're going to a lake with trophy pike in it. What kind of line should I get? Any recommendations on brands?

Just get tip up line. Any kind will do just don't buy the coated stuff it's junk.

I like this braided nylon, you can get them at Fishing hole, they strong and cheap. Get 50 LB and you good to go.

Yup that's the stuff. Canadian tire sells it as well. If you want to get fancy you can buy metered line but I've never seen the benefit to it other than it looks cool.

Canadian tire sells stuff that's called Northern Braid it's nice for tip ups! Don't use stuff like spider wire or power pro. It's like trying to pull on razor blades lol. I put that stuff on a tip up and cut my hands pretty bad!

I've never used a tipup either but I noticed the line is super thick. Do I tie a leader to it or just leave it as is?

Yep, tie tip up line to swivel and than tie your leader, if you go after pike I suggest fluro carbon leader (usually comes in 30-50 yards spools) 30LB or more. For walleye and rainbow use 15LB or less.

Rather than using tip-ups, I put the hook with bait down to 6" from bottom and snap a red and white float onto the line. Put the float on the ice beside the hole where you can watch it. When the float goes down you are in business. After the float a few feet of line is left on the ice. The line is tied to a stick which prevents everything from disappearing down the hole. Later I wrap the line length wise on the stick to store when not in use. It is easy to have several sticks with line in a 5 gallon pail. For sticks I use a strip of board with notches at each end to help hold line during storage. Cost about $1 for one J hook, line, float and stick. This is easy for kids to pull fish up as there is no equipment to mess them up.

The best tip up line I have used is actually fly line backing, holds up great!
