View Full Version : Best $ you've spent on ice fishing gear other than flasher, auger, and tent???
Just wondering what's the best / most important piece of ice fishing gear you could just not do without apart from flasher, tent, and power auger.

I like my Uglystick GX2 med-heavy rod quite a bit... but I didn't buy it, I found it. It must have bounced out of a sled, then got run over by a truck, the reel was smashed but the rod was OK. Been using it for about 4 years now and have bought them for both my daughters.
The Med/Heavy action is a little misleading, its got enough backbone to fight a big pike, but a sensitive enough tip to work on perch. Spooled up with 8lb line it works great for any species. Its not the nicest rod I've owned by a long shot, but its my favorite for sure.
I've played around with all kinds of lures but have gone almost exclusively to baited spoons the last few years. A 1/4- 1/2 oz Len Thompson or Williams spoon baited with a half minnow seems to be a presentation that just about any predator will take a swipe at, just about any day of the week, in just about any lake. For perch and trout I go a bit smaller, and tie a baited fly about 6" up the line dropshot style.

My Shimano Calcutta D series CT200, let's me run 12 pound Berkley XL and catch lakers well over 20 pounds, drag is as smooth as one can dream of. Big Buddy heater would be a close second

Cabelas trans Alaska boots. Good to - 485 or whatever degrees you find on the dark side of the moon. Ideal for sitting still. Not the best for hiking so I tend to pack them in and change after I get set up.

Underwater camera keeps the kids interested. I'm surprised that no one has listed a snowmobile or quad!

The best piece of ice fishing I just recently bought, that didn't cost the farm was one of these:

Thats easy. No question a underwater camera(entertaining and educating). I can dress up enough and have tent to break the wind.:)

Beer!
Cause beer will get you thru times of no fish better than fish will get you thru times of no beer!
Seriously, an underwater camera. As mentioned before, entertaining and educational. Got a killer deal on a Marcum VS 385C at Canadian Tire and have never regretted the purchase.

Lots of things.
Jaw jacker, buddy heater, ice scoop, muck boots but the best thing I ever invested in was a good ice suit. I bought it about 5 years ago but it's a frabill suit. I love it and never go fishing without it.

Pretty pleased with how well the Marmish fishing rods combined with Fiskas hooks attached have been working the past 3 years. A deadly combination for putting more perch in the bucket.

$14.99 on sale at the fishing hole this fall, the red Eskimo ice anchor adapter used on a cordless drill to drive in your ice anchors to secure your tent. Excellent little investment. Also my Black Frabill ice suit, cordless marcum camera panner. All great investments and worth every penny!

My sled.
It's a smaller one, but I can pack everything into it and it's effortless to pull on the ice. I put some wax on the bottom and it just glides.
Also put my elk in it and dragged that 3km to the truck.
I'm gonna need to get a bigger one now that I want to get an underwater camera and power auger
