The boys finally have a Sunday off from hockey so I promised them an ice fishing trip. We decided on Lac La Biche - anyone been out recently?

I was out there yesterday. 30 inches of ice, fishing was terrible and you can pretty much drive anywhere since there is 0 snow. Have fun !

There's tons of lakes around lac la biche I want to try, I'm always working around here but never drove up there on my weekends off yet. I think I'll wait to take the boat out as it's easier to find fish in the lakes I have no experience with.

Fished La biche a couple times this year. Absolutely dead ???? It was better last year. Can't figure out why it's so dead ???

I agree, it was great last year... and this year it has been terrible. I seen tons of "people" netting it this year in late December, early January. Only other reason I can think of is the lack of snow making visibility a factor. A lot of lakes have been slow this year.

When you say you saw tons of "people" netting, what exactly does that mean?

Lots of local "subsistence" fishermen netting walleye, not whites!!!!:angry3:

Spent the last week on La biche and it was painfully slow. Only 1 pike over 10lbs and never broke the 25" mark with walleye. Most trips we break 10lbs multiple times ad usually get a few 26-28" walleye.

A few weeks ago I landed my pb pike right at 40" and about 19-20lbs (never weighed)

Was out this past sunday and found it to be alot slower then usual. Also found the water to be very murky compared to the last couple of years. Managed to hook into several undersized pike and a half dozen eyes on the ol' jaw jacker.

Hopefully it picks up in march.

You have to know where to go on this lake,my last outing I put over 30 walleye on the ice,30lb,10,8,5,4 pike. No I didnt weigh them ,the pike was 46-48" long and just barely fit up an 8" hole.I spent a good 10 min fighting it on a small rod and another 10 trying to line it big head up so I could get it up the hole. The walleye were 2lb-8lb.All the fish are super fat and healthy. When searching for a good area keep in mind the ling are spawning, find them and you will find the rest!

Went straight for perch this afternoon because I heard they were eaten out on the lake, forgot my maggots but the fish showed up on the flasher and had a few nibbles but no fish on the ice. My buddy show up with some maggots and the perch started biting but it was slow. All small perch but they are still there. I always have better luck in the morning here till about 11am so I'm going after them again soon .

Just shocked how DEAD la biche has been this winter compared to other years. Makes you wonder what the open water season has in store ???

No I snowmobiled in, the perch fishing was very slow but I caught a few walleye also. Perch started biting in the evening. I'm not very familiar with the lake though . I only boated in one year from Jackson and gave it a try in the past. Limited out at spencer though Saturday .

A couple of walleye each wont make a difference. Lake has healthy population of eyes ...

Have you counted the number of "subsistence" nets in the prime walleye areas of the lake on a year round basis? Walleye are the target fish, not whites, pike, or burbot, with a lot of walleye leaving the lake as a result. Having lived in the area for 35 odd years, I personally know most of these fishermen and have heard their stories of how many and how large their catches are.:angry3:I am surprised that tags were issued. Use them while you can!!!!

I fish la biche extensively probably more then anyone except old Tom from Plamondon. I have only ever seen a net once set up by Currant island around xmas of this year. I am not sure how much the lake is getting netted. Lots of walleye still around. The perch are gone for now something has to be eating them....

They net Big Bay & around the small island across from the boat launch, along the shore of Lakeview, and along the east side, south of Golden Sands, north of Currant Island and in the area where the Owl River empties into the lake. The Russky's look after the La Biche River area, especially at spawn.

the government should never stock a lake that is net fished.

I agree. I don't believe that the lake is stocked any more. It was stocked many years before metis were granted the same fishing & hunting rights as indians for the most part, and they are the ones raping the resource. Commercial fishing as it is known is no longer done. Even when commercial fishermen used the lake, they were required to set a long way from where the walleye were known to habit. Bycatch limits of walleye were strictly enforced, shutting down the fishery if & when a small poundage of walleye was caught.

Get your facts straight dude before going online and posting some racist remarks. It's against the law, even for First Nations to net north of golden sands, towards the owl river. Fish and wildlife patrol the area regularly and pull nets without permits or in unauthorized zones such as the NE side of the lake.
