View Full Version : Pigone, no need to check, it rocks!

Had a great day at Gull on Saturday with the burbs running every direction. Fished with some good buds and had a heck of a good time.

Today, I head out to Pigeon - day 2 of the weekend. So I get out, get set up, and start jigging and have the jaw jacking in a 2nd hole. I kept seeing marks on the bottom that would only come up maybe 3 feet. After working the spoon for a bit I got 1 to follow and hooked it. Ended up being a 12 inch walleye..... good to see natural recruitment but nothing to get too excited about. Repeat this about ...6 times.

This kept on for a bit while the wind absolutely howled by. Seemed like a waste and I was wishing to be at Gull amongst the burbs.

Around 11 a.m. sound the usual mark at the bottom but this time it came up quicker and formed a 3 bar red line....pulled the WW up a bit...pulled a bit more up... and wham!!! The jaw jacker goes off as the 3 red lines converge with the green one... Start reeling right away and get the fish up right near the bottom...the it ran...and ran.....and ran........and ran.......then.....it ran..........

Not wanting to be fooled by another 4 lber. I just kept at it and kept fighting back. Finally saw the fish.......super tank!!! I knew I had a really big white that I've been waiting for. It was a quite a back and forth for about 10 minutes. I didn't panic and just kept steady tension on. Finally turned the head into the hole, which was not easy, and pulled it up with the hook squarely in the nose. Pulled it out and knew I had something big. Went back to fishing. :)

Had quite a few more follows and some really close calls with more whites but nothing more. Also managed to land a 5-6 lb pike which fought really well too. That was it.

Yep, a new PB set on whites today at 6.4 lbs and 25.25 inches!!! Yes!!!
Finally landed one of those big ones that usually swim off.
So that is 5 for 5 trips to Pigeon, 6 whites in 5 trips, and a new PB to top it off. Totally stoked over this. What a great weekend this has been!

Atta boy. I seen my share of those buggers and snapped them off and straightened hooks. They are way different than the 4.5-5.5 lbers when the moment of truth comes. Way to go bud and thanks for sharing. I love the big pig whitefish, thick right down to the tail.

The whitefish probably has enough fat along the back you could call it bacon.

You know what was weird, the 3 lber I caught last week, one of the smallest I've seen at Pigeon, had way more fat. It had a real hump on it too. This 6.4 lber was really not bad at all and that surprised me.

P.S. Forgot to mention, I drill the first hole and it chews through nicely - nice hard ice at Pigeon. The 2nd, I hit a dirt lump left behind by a vehicle. It was under the new snow. I think I saw someone say earlier that the Jiffy chipper blades were not as susceptible. It went instantly dull - likely the guiding middle blades and it took all my weight on it to finish that hole. I almost said forget it and was just going to fish the one hole. I'm glad I didn't because that was the hole where the JJ went and where the fish was caught :)

Time to change over to the back up blades and get these ones sharpened.

Mr Snap .... that's sure is a Bty Whitie ... don't believe I've ever seen a larger one on Gull or Sylvan. Tks for sharing the exciting story with lots of pic's. When you filleted it did you check to see what it had inside it's gut, it would be interesting to see what these big guys eat to get to this size. I also wonder how old this fish would be, most likely in the order of 10-12 years ?

Thanks Zip, I did not check the stomach though it did not look full at all. The poo definitely was mostly bugs...accidentally checked :)
I did check a 4.7 lber last week and it was pretty much empty in the stomach. I was expecting shrimp but really didn't find any.

That life span could be about right. They live to 20 years max.

Pigone...I was 4 rum and cokes in when I wrote the report. :lol: And they were big pours. You know, 2 fingers...just Andre the Giant fingers....
