I 'owned' a 77v in blue/wood 6mm with HB, great coyote whakr! and is great gun for its (production)class
until i got broke into, now its gone!!
Ive got a real interest in a ruger SS/laminate compact in 308 /7-08 with the 16" tube.
I am also interested in , would love to hear from anyone willing to part with/ has shot/has owned a compact ruger.
would like it into build a ultrasmall, ultralite bigbore with intermediate eye relief scope for EZ carryn and fast swinging

The M77 is a good, reliable rifle. The main complaint that some guys have is the trigger. It's not really easily adjustable, so if you're not happy with the pull / creep, you have to replace it with an after market trigger. Most guys seem to like their Rugers though.

I've got a M77 MKII .243, Stainless with the laminated wood stock. Its a beautiful gun and shoots well now that I've had the trigger replaced with an adjustable aftermarket one by the gunsmith. I'm waiting to put a new stainless 4x12 Luepold on it next month. The only drawback I see is that the gun seems a little on the heavy side.....If you're buying new, and your doing alot of humping and weight is an issue, I'd look at the Tikka T3 Light.

Good rifle and yes the trigger has a lot to be desired.
Most Model 77MkII's should be going into clear out sales mode(they are S. of 49th), because Ruger is doing a remodification on the 77, they are going to call it the 77 Hawkeye, it will have a different dimension stock, and a more user friendly trigger.

Ya beat me to it Dick. The new Hawkeye seems to address some of the complaints that have plagued the Ruger (i'm talking about what I've read. Only ruger I've ever shot is a 10/22!). "Improved" (their words) trigger, and if you are going stainless, less glare than you get off the currently shiny (to my eye) ruger barrel.

I bought one last year, Stainless laminate in 30-06.Trigger is horrible had a gunsmith here in Edmonton adjust it to 3.75lbs cost me $45.00.I love the gun it shoots awesome off the bench, as well not to mention in the field . Only other complaint would be the hinge floor plate release button is very stiff and awkward to release your amo.Other than that I love the gun, it was my first new one in about 25 yrs.
Good luck with your purchase, there are a lot of sweet guns out there.

I have an old M-77 MKI in 7mm Rem Mag that I'm very happy with. I really like the action, and I like the balance when holding it.
Frankly, I never had any issues with weight, and the trigger works for me, but I should note that I haven't shot a huge variety of guns, either! :D
Cheers,

I really enjoy the research and the bantering back and forth with others about which is the best gun, best ammo, etc. It's interesting and fun, and you learn a lot. But after doing a lot of it, listening to people with decades of experience, and agonizing over what to get the past few months here, I've come to the conclusion that for the most part, it doesn't matter (for the average hunter at least. I acknowledge target shooters, or really serious "big time" hunters may be different)
What I mean by "it doesn't matter" is that it seems to me that most of the major gun makers build good guns that do the job. If they didn't, those companies wouldn't be "major gun makers". Nobody makes a 30-06 that can't reliably kill a deer at 250 yards. Ditto for calibers, trajectory, etc. I mean of COURSE there are significant differences between a 243 Win and a 300 Win Mag, but does it make any sense to agonize over the differences in performance between a 270, 280, and 7mm-08? Almost any size you chose you will find a ton of people who say "It sure works for me!". So relax. I'd say pick the rifle that has the features you like and that you feel good with. Caliber? Once you have the general size given your intended game, pick one that gives you the most ammo and game options.:D

Do you think we are that swayed by marketing hype?

Do you think we are that swayed by marketing hype?
Oh, I know I am. I'll admit it.
I thought a bunch of different things were important with regard to new calibers, features, etc. The I sat down with my buddy who hunts with a decades-old Parker Hale 30-06 and has taken ten times the deer, moose, elk that I'll ever hope to take. Suddenly a lot of super new fancy features didn't seem so necessary.
