And do any have bird dogs?

I have a WPG female and a GSP male. I'm planning to be very active in the local NAVHDA chapter and maybe even try to train my dogs to prance around in a circle too. I do believe in a dog being used for what its bred for and to look right doing it. No reason why a person cannot have the whole package.

You and me both. As you know I got my 13 month old GSP and my 7 year old Irish Setter. The GSP took Best of Breed 2 weekends ago over a Top 10 in Canada GSP and we go back next weekend for his last 2 points.

I have my NAVHDA membership sent out for the Wild Rose chapter and the international. I will test in UPT this summer and FD in the spring. If we pass FD FDX will be in the fall. He is ready for FDX now but with the CKC rules it makes a guy obtain a FD title. We will also try our hands at a few walking Derby and Puppy trials. If you are interested in any of this throw my a PM and I will get you dates, entry forms, and locations.

Hope to see you at the tests and come fall bag a few birds over each others dogs.

Definitely an upland bird hunter here. That's almost all I ever hunt. And my new 8 week old Brittany arrives next Sunday! Can't wait.

Excellent choice in breed smurph........ to be honest, I don't think there is a bad bird dog breed.

Ryan, wow, I sure hope I don't have to be that good!!

And did I miss it on that other BB? They would love to hear it.

I like chasing birds as well and usually am running after my friend's Springer. Quite regularly I kick up birds with no dog around which is quite surprising (and frustrating to the dog owner).

Hey Ryan,

The Brit is from Jayhawker's in Airdrie.

(hope it's ok to post that... - just a link to the pups and the lines)

Yes I am familiar with Jayhawker. I knew they had a litter on the ground about ready to go. This is why I asked.

Avid bird hunter and gundog owner here too!

Northern Hunting Mom, did you see the WPG at the big dog show on TV this weekend? What a great looking dog! I have a GWP but she's so shaggy she gets confused for a griff all the time. Personally I don't see myself getting into the show thing but I can totally understand the dog culture behind it. Besides, although my dog is a very promising field dog I don't think she would measure up well to the breed standard, since she's a bit of a runt (as am I). She's a sweetheart with a great drive for birds and a super sniffer so I'm happy.

In my opinion, life not just hunting is better with a dog.

Gotta love bird hunting!! Nothing better than a few dogs, some good friends, a long row of bush or small creek, and a nice fall day for a walk.......and even better when you return to the truck for a bowl of water for the dogs, a cold drink, and a vest full of birds.....

I am an avid upland bird hunter and have a 3 1/2 year old wirehaired pointing griffon. Great family dog and really showed great improvement last season finding and pointing birds - thanks to population explosion of ruffies he really started to figure things out and improved with each outing. I am looking forward to a great next season and will try to do more water training this summer.

OK, all you budding bird dog trainers how about joining up with the Calgary Pointing Dog Club for a training seminar put on by Dan Hoke, a preeminent trainer from Washington. RyanGSP should be able to post the particulars as I don't have them handy.

Perhaps run your dog in a test or trial or two or three to get some off season training and exposure for your dog. Hook up with some dog folks and have some fun.

As scott said Dan is putting on a Seminar. He is probally one of the most famous trainers in all of north america. I have very little info because it is still in the planning stages but anyone who wants on the mailing list should pm me and I will give you the email.

Join the Calgary Pointing Dogs club or our new NAVHDA club. Supports the clubs by testing and trialing your dogs. If we can get enough support we are trying for a club in the south. But so far not enough interest.

That was one beautiful bitch Remi but I found the BOS (Dog) to be a bit too square but otherwise a very nice dog. That bitch was very nice and wasn't too shaggy like I've seen some wpg shows on tv or online.

I'll get in touch with Ryan about that seminar. If I can get to it, I would like to but my first few months there will be a bit hectic.

Definitely interested in that training seminar in Calgary. Actually about to joing the Edmonton Pointing Dog Club as soon as I get the CKC info back on my pup. I've picked the name Gunner but still am having trouble deciding what to use for the Registered name... 'Jayhawkers Special Agent K-Nine' was one thought. The pups mother is Jayhawkers Agent Ninety-Nine - aka 'Dallas'. So I thought about something close to that. Anyway... i've now gotten WAY off the post topic. I'll send ya an email Ryan.

We go out a few times a year. Last season was the first year with my own dog. He's a Labradoodle. He picked it up pretty quickly off my boss's Chocolate Lab. He doesn't retrieve very well, but he flushes really well and stays close. Super smart dog. I thought I'd have to train him alot more then I have.

Ryan, I'm not sure he has any Hank in him. His sire is Dual Ch. Kinwashkly Mac Magoo, F.D.J. His mother is Ch. Kinwashkly French Velour. His grand sires are Ch. Kinwashkly Red Apache and Dual/AFC The Whiz Kid. His grand dams are Ch. Kinwashkly Katydid It and Dual Ch. Kinwashkly Sunshine Girl.

None of that means that much to me, just what the breeder told me and his papers say. I'm hoping that all those "champions" have produced a dog that I can't screw up TOO badly!

RyanGSP
03-01-2007, 11:58 AM
The dual on his sire means he has his show championship and his field championship so instead of making 2 titles they call it a dual. The FDJ stands for Field Dog Junior which is the basic hunt test level.

the AFC is Amateur Field Champion which is somone who doesnt handle dog proffessionally brought the dog to his championship.

Looks like its going to be a good dog with a big run to him.

I just love the official names of some of these dogs. After seeing the WKC dog show on TV I wished I had the idea to name my dog The Dragon Slayer but alas someone else's lucky dog already goes by that name. Mine will have to be happy with plain old Tula.

Has anyone ever heard the song about a dog named Stains?? Try giving a dog named stains some commands and you'll get the idea.
