Wainwright elk?

I am p5 for cow elk and am looking to try some where new. Was wondering if the base is a good chance for getting a cow. I know of other areas but I would like to try some where new and like the idea of the primitive weapons season. Any help/ advice would be great

The only thing I don't like about using a priority for the camp is you are restricted to your areas.For one you might have a go on them today but tomorrow that area is closed.Now with the 5 zones around there being consolidated as one zone for elk,you would have a better chance in the zones right beside the camp.I have seen them in the camp and I have killed them outside the camp.I would go out of the camp.

Think about the seasons around Suffield. Lots of elk, lots of farmers want elk removed. Only problem, elk quickly learn they are safe on the base. Still decent success.

I'm not sure about the base but I've been told along the river there is lots.I'm only 30min for wainwright and never hunted elk there I head down to porcupine hills.Hows the elk hunting in rocky?I was thinking of trying it out that way this fall.

Personally I wouldn't draw a cow tag at Suffield. I spent a lot of time out there this past summer/fall and would draw a bull tag again, but not a cow. Just my opinion.

Only one elk killed on the base last year. Somewhere outside would give better odds, I would think.

Thats to bad,I really like it out there and was hoping to spend a little time out there bow hunting.Maybe I can find a wolf out there next winter.

OK. Who am I talking to? I just do small gun stuff for me and friends; got rid of all my big equipment. I still do the firearms safety course, and a little Hunter Ed, as well. I retired in 2003, started outfitting, enjoyed that, and now I'm back on the base as a civy Range Patroller......ya gotta like it!!!!!:D Almost like letting the fox look after the henhouse!!:lol:

This cow tag is/was intended as a scouting trip with the hopes of filling it. I am p4 on bull elk ( been building both for a few years now). My real intention was to go to the base looking at the possibility for a trophy moose. I am p9 and did not want to use it on a blind hunt. As far as elk hunting around Rocky, young eldon has hit it right on the head

It would not be my first choice for an antlerless elk tag but if you hunt hard and get lucky with the weather I think you can kill one. Most of the elk are not in the best moose areas so it might not help your scouting too much. All depends on your style of hunting and amount of effort. I think hunting cow elk is easier on a food source.
As fas as the bull moose. Might not be the best place anymore to kill a monster. Be prepared to hunt just as hard and as long to kill a true trophy bull.

If you want a cow i would enter for 936 Blackfoot grazing reserve se of edmonton.You don't have to drive as far but u will need to pack out your elk without motorized vehicles. Tons of elk and there is a guy that rides around with horse and buggy that will pack out your game for a small fee.I hunted there 2 years ago and if i had a cow tag would of been tagged out at legal lite opening morning.

I was the guy who got the bull on the base this past year. I had lots of good advice and put on lots of miles (on foot) to score on the one and only bull I saw. If it was not for the bit of snow we had received I believe I would have been skunked. If I had to do it again I would not hunt for elk on the base. It is just to hit and miss. Like someone already mentioned they KNOW where the safe zones are and you have to beat them before they get there. You do have a better chance if you can get to your area before dark and sometimes that depends on the guys running the show at the base. Sometimes you have to wait for the information sessions before they will let you head out and by the time you get to your area the elk have already moved off. They are definetly there though. Like most days in hunting you just have to be at the right place at the right time.
