My cousin and I are planning our yearly summer trip and due to scheduling we are slated for a week in the middle of July to do some fishing. We would like to target walleye mainly and were thinking about Tobin lake, Sask. Anyone have any insight into this lake in July? We were also considering Lake Diefenbaker. Any other suggestions of places that hold good eyes in Sask are much appreciated.

I should mention that we are open to other locations in Alberta also. Cheers!

I tried the same thing last year of diefenbaker. Caught lots of small Walters but nothing big. The campground at Saskatchewan landing was top notch.

I would go to Tobin myself I think your chances for big eyes are lot better there. You could either fish the lake or the river section and maybe get into some nice ones. The river is a nice option if the wind is blowing to hard to fish the lake.

Diefenbaker has some big ones but I think you need to know how to fish it. I grew up out there and still haven't fished it because I was always told it was a tough lake.

Tobin probably has the biggest eyes and the most of them. One of my top 3-4 walleye is still out of that lake even though I have only fished it once as a kid.

I would have to think your best chance at a big walleye would be Last Mountain Lake.

Every June we go to Deschambult Lake which is a couple of hours north of Tobin lake. Cabins on the lake are quite reasonable. We keep some of the walleye for a supper each night . Average size is under 20 inches , but some pike around the 20 lbs. Tobin lake promotes catch and release , which is something to remember. We go as a group to fish and enjoy some shore lunch and have a good time . If your going for size go to Tobin , if it's numbers and a good time give Deschambult a try

Yup lots of big fish at Last Mountain but if it's windy it can be unfishable for most people.

I haven't fished Tobin in July but have a few times in June and it has both numbers and size for walleye and pike. Unlike Alberta, Tobin is managed with slot limits so you can keep some eaters and release the big spawners. Also, unlike Alberta, there is a definite presence of fish and wildlife ensuring that people follow the rules.

July is tough usually for any lake Tobin included. Yes there's a slot size on walleye and pike that's why it's a world class fishier. I wish more of our lakes would adopt that. Tobin, deifenbaker, and last mountain would be the top 3 for trophy walleye I'd say.

Yes there are rainbows in there, but I'm not sure how much stock is left and if there is natural recruitment (of 2N) in sufficient numbers to sustain Rainbows in that lake.

The world record(s) came out of there by a couple of our very own members here.

The world records will stand for a long long time. Those Rainbows were huge.

The record fish originated from a school of genetic 3N (sterile triploid) trout that escaped from a hatchery.

These fish grow to amazing sizes, far beyond natural 2N Rainbows.

Unfortunately that escape happened about 20 years ago, and the life cycle of the 3N Rainbows is about 20-25 years, and because they are sterile, there will never be another monster like that unless these amazing circumstances ever happen again.

Maybe they are continuing to stock Rainbows? I'm not 100% sure.

There were some more fish escaped just last year I believe. Not sure if they are the same strain or not and if they will ever grow into the monsters the last bunch did.

As it stands right now there are still some big rainbows in there up to the 10-20 lb range but it has been a few years since they caught anything much bigger then that.

This is true. I grew up on diefenbaker and still have a house on it but it's a tough lake if you don't know how to fish it. There's always some dandies caught but if you're making a trip for big walleye Tobin is your best bet.

Thanks for all the replies so far fella's, much appreciated. We ended up booking at Tobin so hopefully we made the right call. Anyone plan to be up there mid July or have any tips for that lake come mid-summer when walleye fishing? I will do my best to take some pics and report back with how the fishing turned out. Cheers!

If you google Tobin Lake there is a locals map that has some awesome info on it... Assume you are staying at Tobin Lake Resort? Bait store there is fantastic and they will share tons of info with you... You will be close to river or lake for fishing.. Prudens point,, pemmican point and eagles nest are all pretty close... also can fish flats for big pike.. You will have an amazing time, have fun

Nice! Let me know how the water clarity is. I've heard with the amount of flood water this spring that the lake can get super dirty and make fishing very tough. Hence why I booked mid summer to hopefully avoid the brown water. Is Tobin Ice free yet?

Yes it is completely free of ice. The last of the sheltered stocked trout lakes are breaking up now and there should be no more ice anywhere by the weekend
