For the first time since the fall of 1983 when I began to hunt I own 3 hunting DVDs. My wife gave them to me for Christmas, she picked them up while she was in Montana with a ladies group.

1) Smokin' Hunts with Cad Schearer
2) Chad Schearer's Elk Bugling 101
3) BlackPowder 101 with O'Neill Williams and Chad Schearer

Chad spends 209 days of the year in the woods. Chad and O'Neill have a TV program called {Blackpowder Guns and Hunting, and he is a winner of major Elk calling competitions. He also owns and operates Central Montana Outfitters.

I met Chad's father on a few occasions and my wife meet both of his parents, but I never met him.
Now as for hunting shows,DVDs I am not a big fan of them, but hey that is just me. I will admit that the Elk Bugling 101 has some good tips in it and so does Blackpowder 101 yet I can only watch them for no more than 30mins if that. That goes for any hunting show....nonetheless I picked up some good tips and well thats good.

How do you feel abouting hunting shows are they for you?, and if so what are your favorite shows or videos?

You need to get some better videos. I haven't ever heard of the guys that you have on video. Doesn't sound like they are all that high quality. I have made a dozen videos with Rod Haydel for a T.V. show called cabin hunting on duck and goose hunting. What I have found is that you really need a good camera man to do a good job. Our shows were o.k but I have seen a lot better and I have noticed that it is hard to get the perfect shots all the time.

my brother is editing his second one as we speak, his first one was called 'Bucks Unlimited'.
this one has taken 5 years to compile, a good lope, 50" moose, 26" mulie, 5x5 elk at 5 yards get taken...see a rattled whiteys come in walk away, wild huntable book deer, 17 wolves at once at 3 to 50 yards....a fight between a huge NT and a much, much smaller 160" buck... tons of wild life, see this camera man get stalked at 10 yards by a cougar
I used the equipment to film a 220" whitetail and then also filmed a 30" 200+ mulie with four droptines on one side breed a doe at 50 yards.
Im excited about it, although i was there for most of the filming, I just seen the first hour last weekend.

If you are at all into Goose hunting check out the Zink Calls series of videos called 24/7. They are the best I bird hunting vids I have seen.

Hey nube in Canada we may not know who he is but his elk DVD is a good learning tool. Areas in the U.S. around Montana know who he is, check out his web site, Punch in Central Montana Outfitters. His camera work is good...I personally don't find hunting vids all that exciting. The learning ones are ok but hunting vids I can only endure for a short time. It is nice to see a Red stag,Ox and other animals but after the fifth animal harvest that enough for me no matter who the hunter is. Now those "great escape" type shows are ok to watch, you know the kind where a rabbit escapes the yotes jaws just by inches. I like the manuvers. Even these vids can help a hunter.

I want to know how others feel about hunting DVDs. But I will agree some hunting vids are more exciting than others.

I enjoy watching hunting video's. My favorites are from Jack Brittingham and Jim Shockey. I find they are the most entertaining and they behave in appropriate manner when they make a kill. I really like to watch the African videos.

Yup, I can't get enough of my truth big bulls vids. I owe a lot of what I know about hunting elk to this series, and yes I watch them all times of the year. In the last week I have watched #3 and #7. Still waiting for #10 to get here....damn UPS>:

Hey Gunslinger, just out of curiosity, who did you book your Dall sheep hunt with? I agree those Lancaster videos are really good. I got my goat with them in the Nahani this summer and it was unreal to see some of the rams that were coming through camp.

My favorite are the Wensel brothers, hilarious as two monkeys in a shark tank.

They recently came out with another DVD, find it at

Folks,

I can't say that all hunting videos are equal.

If I can add my 2 cents worth, I've found three companies that I like.

1) the Eastman series on Elk hunting are quite good,

2) Ed Sceery's bugling videos are pretty good as well, although he teaches only one thing per video

3) Northern Giants series - these guys are the best in my opinion

I just fall asleep when watching the others, and sorry Brady, no disrespect intended but the Primos videos are about as boring as they come. I find that a bit disturbing since I love to hunt and think about hunting all the time, but watching Uncle Jed and the boys giving each other high fives and a "hot dang wasn that a big un" is just too much.

I don't mind buying hunting videos, it's just that I don't want to spend my hard earned bucks on one star vids, and then regretting that I paid $35 or more for a piece of #$%@ that I'll never watch again.

Cheers,
Rubber Ducky

if you could design a vid what would it be?
do you prefer to see actual kills or bloodless, bambi style
wildlife being wildlife like in a documentary style with no hunting, or variety of kills, variety of wildlife, wild locations and not everything has to die...toss in some birds, bulls, bucks, some shed hunting and related activities
sorry grandz if this is hijacking your thread

Hi Varmitr;

If I could suggest a script for a typical hunting video or series of videos, I would include a brief rundown of the animal that's being hunted, typical sign such as rubs, scrapes, wallows and where to look, it's defenses and typical reactions to threats, the type of territory it inhabits, and then typical tactics on how to hunt the beasties in the types of terrain in which they are found.

It would help if the announcers or narrators were professionals so that they could give some life to the videos. There are far too many "uncle Jed and the boys" videos and they are BORING beyond any earthly power or will to endure.

I did E-mail the makers of th Northern Giants series about a possible elk video but they responded saying that it would be at least a few years away.

Perhaps this board could also provide a review whereby a video would be given the following types of ratings:

1. zzzzzzzzzzz....

2. Hot Dang, wasn that a big'un, the kids can eat tonight :(

3. Hey this is pretty good, Honey get me a beer :)

4. I'm gonna grab my gun and go out after them :D

Cheers,
Rubber Ducky

Well Rubber Ducky, they serve their purpose for me, but I like the "boring" parts just as much as the money shots. To me they show more of what the hunt is all about, and also they throw in the odd tutorial in too. I guess like my 'pa used to say..." If it ain't dammed well broke, ain't no use trying to fix it" That's prolly the best way I can sum it up, for me at least.

you want get to the kill, get a Jack Brittingham. You want to be fully entertained, with the before kill, the kill, and after the kill experience, get a Primos. Primos Truth 9 Big Bulls was well done, so was #8. cant wait for 10.

wifey and i watched truth big bulls 9, Truth calling all coyotes 2, Jack brittinghams Big Game V all this afternoon. was a great way to spend quality time in front of the wide screen:b

I'm looking forward to Wholesale Sports. My kids (10 and 4) ask to watch hunting videos and practice calling. My oldest is not bad on moose and pretty good on elk. My 4 yr old is more annoying but its for a good cause.

Hi Brady,

The reason I don't like the Primos vids is because ALL I get to see is 20 scenes of a guy sitting in the trees blowing his bugle.

What I would like to see, is how and why a particular spot was picked, what was the countryside like that is what type of country holds elk and what type does not. A bit more background or tutorials on the setup of the hunt would certainly be nice.

I'm a beginning hunter and I'll admit that just about everybody on this board knows more than I do. I've just about given up on buying hunting videos but have found that there are some really good books from which to learn.

Cheers,
Rubber Ducky

p.s. I got my son started on duck hunting at the age of 4. I did take him out for pheasants as well, but when he was 14 he decided that he wanted to hunt deer and elk instead. In the process he got me hooked on elk but I'm not complaining. :D

I think Primos vid's are the highest quality on the market right now.In saying that i think you have to be a hard core elk hunter to enjoy them. The thing i like most about primos are they are very ethical and do not take low percentage shots at animal's no matter what.Jack B on the other hand i can't stand and think he is one of the most unethical bowhunter's out there.Has anyone else noticed the shot's that he takes in his video's.I think Hunting Vid's these day concentrate to much on the killing part and not enough on the hunt itself.I liked older movies like StoneyWolf that showed all aspects of the hunt.I great hunting vid to me is one that show's stuff like scenery, camp life, what's for supper, packing the animals out etc etc.Am i alone on this when i say i love to see video of a pound of bacon frying over the open fire somewhere high on the mountain.:lol

My top 4 hunting company's are..

Lancaster Vid's are Awesome
Dave Coleman's videos
Primos
Craig Boddington has Great African videos.

Jim Shockey's moose vid's are hard to resist also because i am a yukon moose Fanatic.

My 2 cents:D

add another one for the primos for me but i like the old ones too. i have some george kluckly films here and i still love watching them, they show the whole hunt, camp... my favorite is his alaskan dall sheep hunt. jack does take some iffy shots but i think a lot of people (maybe not everyone) would take some of the shots. but sticking to the subject i cant get enough of hunting movies i watch them like they are going out of style and own over 50 of them.

i hear you on that one, how many times does he take frontal shots on elk with a mechanical broad head? Kodiak Brown bears with a mechanical?

and how the He** can i get a hold of one of these Craig Boddington Vids??? thx

what i would like to see in hunting videos, is a little more instructional stuff. like why they are hunting where they are hunting. how they got there. what they use, why they use it. how they get the animal out. show them tracking the animal. the mistakes they make (because everybody make them at one point or another), and how to avoid those mistakes. how they prepare for the hunt, & prepare for scent control. would like to see them hunt on public land like the rest of us. primos vids are too hollywood. they would be better if Will P. did not speak. if there is only one camera, how do they get all these angles of the hunter before, during and after the shot? the way they celebrate after the shot makes me want to puke! they celebrate before they find the animal? if i had more time and the $$ i would make a good vid...the Canadian way!! I.M.H.O.

For those sheep hunters out there my vote has to be for "The Guides Eye" with the Lancaster family. Their videos are done professionally not blurry and no hokey tunes. All hunts are fair chase and they generally show several hunts for each of the 4 north american wild sheep on each video. I got most of mine online, but the Calgary archery centre has got most of them. You can find them onine at www.allhorn.com
