Lots of good ideas in that. Good place to start rethinking fishery management

Whether or not it's implemented, I like that they're putting time and thought into these issues. Thumbs up from me!

Nice to see a government reinvest what they make off the sportsmen. Previous governments took the money and ran. We need a significant increase of presence in Wildlife Officers in this province along with biologists that know how to do their job.

If they actually plan on implementing this they will have my vote

Not a fan of reopening the conversation about commercial fishing. "Harvest management" for those who missed. Rest looks decent.

Wow, somebody actually wants the fish eaters Tom be able to take a few fish home rather than kill a few minnows. Absolutely, lets go back to 1980s style fish stocking numbers and have a little fun again.

Lots of other good things. Just have to get the merge done and somehow ensure sound thinking goes forward.

Yes, that is a quite well thought out and comprehensive report, though the section on barbed vs barbless has no scientific basis to support their conclusions.
It's nice to see such hard work and effort go into putting together a report like this. The problem I have, is that like every other political party that is NOT in power, these great plans, schemes and promises are always brought foreward before an election, but once elected, out come out all the excuses as to why all these great plans can't be implemented. I can hear it now..... "yes we would love to aerate more lakes but Healthcare needs money, seniors need money, schools need money, infrastructure needs money, I and my political buddies need more money etc and so on.
Funny how priorities and promises change once the wannabes become the ones in power. Fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities get pushed to the bottom of the priority lineup. Never changes, though one can dream.

Not a fan of the commercial fishing restart. The economic benefits do not outweigh the damage these guys do with by-catch.

The rest looks ok, especially the cormorant control, and single barbless hooks instead of closures.

I believe the ACA has already returned to mechanical surface aeration.

I wonder who wrote this?

The plan is missing one Huge point that is essential for success.

Financing!

How will this be paid for?

Until and unless financing sources for these concepts is critically evaluated and projected to be realistically achieved, this document hold no water.

Yes, I agree with the dialogue, and appreciate the Wildrose taking time to dedicate even this amount of effort.

Yet we MUST start promoting conservation efforts that Include financial plans.
With F&W's budget continuously over allocated, the only way to have any potential success in actually putting boots on the ground with these concepts is to show the how the money would flow.

I dunno about the finance comment. We don't know what context this is taken in. Maybe take it for just the ideas presented. Then again, is this not normal for most political promises - provide information (low on substance) :)

Some good ideas, some recycled bits than have been around forever. Slot sizes were abandoned years ago because a lack of angler compliance. Need to restart and revitalize fishing education programs around the province.

Hard to support the Wildrose Party on anything fishing related when they choose to score cheap political points and ignore science as they routinely do.

Also hard to imagine our fisheries are a priority of a political party that won't support the obvious choice outlined in the Castle Plan in regards to severely curtailing or banning OHV's where the habitat has been severely impacted. Continuing that thought, also difficult to take them seriously when they happily and merrily agree to engage in a campaign of half truths and misinformation in regards to said Castle Plan.

And Alberta doesn't need commercial fisheries. Got enough issues balancing off sportfishing with first nations harvest rights.

So big giant meh from me. Obviously I am not sold the Wildrose really and truly has habitat, fish, and wildlife as a top priority. They would rather placate the self interested.

This has some good points, Southern Alberta has not had a walleye stocking program for a number of years now, hopefully this will be a go. Also the slot size i be leave will help the fisheries greatly.

Aside from financing they managed to leave out the biggest problem we have...enforcement of all these nice regulations they are proposing. More CO's, and stricter penalties for poachers.

Not a bad paper in all hits the high points easy to read along with sources cited.May help with people who have limited knowledge of fishing problems/issues.Costs should and must be raised as this is no quick or easy fix in light of the growing Whirling Disease outbreak.:thinking-006:

WRP has always maintained that we pay too much per capita into provincial coffers already. If they eliminate a lot of the waste that exists in government already, policies like this can be easily paid for and still have money left over. So many opponents waste money on management when increasing spending, but target front-line services when reducing. WRP plans include eliminating waste, putting some of those savings into front-line services, and STILL spending less money. To quote an often used WRP phrase, "Alberta doesn't have a revenue problem, it has a spending problem."

All is fine and dandy but maybe they should consider managing the lakes themselves. I can name quite a few that the water levels have dropped so much that the low water levels are a huge impact on fish survival.

You can probably walk across Cooking lake in waist deep water.
Hastings lake, now have an extra 100 ft of beach front.
Beaverhill is all dried up.
North buck, has probably dropped 4ft if not more.
Lake Bellevue has probably dropped at least 6 ft.
Does Missawawi, close to N. Buck have any water left in it ?

Just to name a few. If they drop anymore then all of them will be dried up completely.
No water = no fish !

I bet there are hundreds of lakes that the water levels have dropped more than 4 ft. in the last 15 years. I blame it on oil companies and drilling. JMO.

If you ever want to see a blank stare, just ask a politician, "Fix this lake, it is broke". :)

You can add Lower/Upper Mann Lakes, Chickenhill, Vincent, Floatingstone...
That area needs a biblical flood.
