Well, after months of debating and choosing, and asking you guys for opinions, I finally bought my first centerfire rifle on the way home from work today from Wholesale Sports.

Browning A-Bolt II Stainless Stalker in 270 Winchester. Nice synthetic stock, really light gun. I LOVE it, so far LOL. Topped it with a Leupold VXII 3X9X40 long range duplex in matte black.

I hummed and hawed about getting something a bit bigger, or some new magnum, but I shot a buddy's 270 and 30-06, and the 270 just felt good. He's a wildlife officer and avid hunter and he said not to worry, his 270 has taken plenty of elk and moose, so I figured it's big enough.

So now I'm at two shotguns, two 22's, and one centerfire, still got a long long ways to catch up to some of you! I'm eager to use the darn thing. I'm thinking maybe coyotes. Maybe a bit of overkill, but that's THEIR problem

You will definitely enjoy the gun oko and as far as a 270 being you're first large center fire rifle you made a very wise choice. Have fun

Does it have the B.O.S.S. on it ? (don't recall a stainless having one though...)

the 270 is good middle-of-road-starter round that will never go out of fashion, If you get a second or a third rifle, you can go smaller and faster (like a 2506, 243wsm coyote whacker)or go bigger and heavyer (for eggzample a 300win or 338mag elk smacker) and have a great well rounded cabinet.
and yet anyone of them can do all of your average hunting situation

didn't get boss. Recoil isn't a problem and I didn't want the extra noise. Jamie, I'm ancient. Oldestson is in college and my beard is white!

Wasn't meaning a recoil issue. I have the Browning Syn. Stalker in 300 win mag. (mat...don't like stainless) & I think the same scope.
With the BOSS you can get the solid piece & it is meant to balance your barrel. (I need to pick up this piece !) I tuned mine to pound tacks @ 200m.

One day I'll replace my BARs with the 270 A-bolt & will get the BOSS on it.....wish the same rifle in 22-250 came with the BOSS !

I heard also, you can dail in your groups with the boss system.
This way you don't have to try different bullet loads .
Is this true ?

Reeves01

I first looked at the BC of each load for the 300. I then chose one & dialed it in & have stuck with it, as it works VERY well.

One thing to do when doing this, is to try & get the same lot numbers on each box. A new/different lot number [may] shoot a bit different.

I'm sold on the BOSS system. It will work as a brake on the kickers, or you can put the solid piece on for just the balancing of the barrel.

OKO. The reason I asked how old you are, is becouse I seem to remember (and I could be wrong) That you mentioned you had a couple of older kids. I was just wondering how you got into hunting at this stage of your life?

Thanks

Actually, I AM recent to hunting. In fact, you could have probably characterized me as an "Anti". Not a PETA sort, but just a "That seems sort of senseless. Wouldn't really bother me if they banned it" sort of guy say 4 years ago.

Then my oldest son (probably 15 at the time) suddenly said he wanted to try it. I have no idea where it came from, think he just had the normal teenage boy urge to shoot a gun. But we didn't have a lot of father/son things we did together, so I said OK, thought it would be something we could share. We took the gun course together from AHEIA, then the hunting course. Then bought ourselves a couple 22's and a couple shotguns. Got into upland first. After a year or two his interest waned. He's not interested anymore, but I got hooked. In fact I even bought a Brittany last spring!

This last season I hunted completely alone. Did my usual upland, and even tried waterfowl! Just bought myself a .270 the other day so big game are also joining the agenda next fall. I think I may even try some yotes in the next few weeks just to try it out! I don't have any friends who hunt, but the husband of one of my wife's friends does big game, so I'll try to tag along on one with him next fall.

So that's my story. Don't hate all Anti's... some of them can be converted! ;)

Oko.
Good on you. I hope your son picks it up again some day soon.
Perhaps he needs a big game hunting trip. Thats what got me hooked!
I still remember staying in the LONGVIEW HILTON. Good times with my Dad. And now look at how much that has grown. I couldnt imagine a hunting season without the old fellow. I know it will happen one day, but until then he is allways the first one invited.
He is down in Pheonix right now shooting trap and soaking up some rays. I dont want to bother him with the latest Grizzly/Brown bear idea I have.. So I was thinking about just buying 2 hunts in Alaska then makeing him pay when he gets home.... Not sure if I have the guts for that one or not.
If your looking to head out Big game hunting for the first Time contact me and I can get you set up with a mentor. (Comes with permision, no cost, and your son would be more than welcome as well)

Take care
Jamie

Jamie,

How are you involved in the mentor hunts? I would be interested in volunteering some time to that this season. What do you need to do to become a "mentor"?

Jamie Hunt
02-15-2007, 04:10 PM
Shotgun. I am not directly involved. But I will find out who you need to talk with.
Thanks for your help.
You should come on Saturday night. I promise you will be most impressed. For me it is one of the nicer get togethers of the year.

Hi Jamie,

I have hunted all my life (I am now 44) and new to this site as of today. I live and am a busy professional in Calgary. I have hunted waterfowl my whole life and limited big game. I too would like to know more about this mentor program as I do really need some guidance on big game hunting. IMy boy is five and i plan on taking him into the field for ducks next year as well. I have all the decoys and a 12 ga semi-Berrta and o/u same and 30-06 700 BDL Rem.

Also, I know of no org. or website dedicated to matching individuals who like to hunt. I have no one to hunt with and am very safety concious. I would like to line up with a few guys who are of like mind. Any thoughts.

A great way to meet some hunting companions is to join a local Fish and Game club and get out to some of their events.

So welcome to the brotherhood! The 270 is one of those calibers that is so perfectly versatile that it is boring. You could hunt the rest of your life happy with that gun.
And anyone with a Britt can't be all bad in my books.

Excellent pic on the 270, now you gotta start reloading, and then as stated before it never ends, Next its a 338 or 700 Nitro? Quad, trailer.generator. hand gun. etc.

You know, each situation is different. Perhaps AHEIA has a program that you will fit into. Especially with your Son being a first time hunter.
I would recommend Calling Dave Paplaski at AHEIA here in Calgary, he should be able to get you started on the right track.
You didn't mention where you are from. Perhaps a bit more info and I can come up with a few more ideas.
BTW Sheep is right. Go to the groups that hunt.

Jamie

BTW.. Welcome to the board.

Oko,
My wife have always told me to find hunting partners to go out with since she doesn't like me going by myself. I've found some great guys on this site and hunt with Tuc all the time. I live just south of you off the dump road. So if you want, we can start talking about possibly hunting next year. Also have a lead on coyotes for the winter out by black diamond. PM me if interested.

Hey Oko,

Congrats on the new gun. I too am in the market for a new centerfire - I have a very old Swedish Mauser but i'm not wishing to sporterize it anytime soon! I am still deciding between the .270 and the 7rem mag. Anyway, I too acquired a new Brittany in the spring of this year. Great pup! Where did you get yours? We may have some upland hunting to do next year!

Take care and Merry Christmas,

Scott

Wow, I'm amazed this thread is still around LOL I started it a year ago. LOL I had an interesting first year. The 270 never brought any game down, but I feel I learned a lot. My brit I got from Maple Creek Sask, from Leslie Andreas.
