Has anyone ever tried targeting whitefish in open water on MacGregor (or travers for that matter) before? I've only ever tried out there in the winter and done well but never tried on open water.

I've caught them in the summer in 2 to 5 ft. of water trolling1 1/2" to 2"
crankbaits, i.e. Mystic Minnows. Had about 200ft. 6# test line out . I'd seen
them while moving about on the lake at low speed. Caught them on cranks at Chin as well while trolling for walleyes.

Try along the dams, winter baits under a bobber or flies. If you have access to a boat, emerging weeds in about 10 or 12 ft of water.

I've caught them on slip bobber with dew worm while fishing for walleye at both the spillway and the dam on travers.

I see oriental folks all the time on Travers fishing for them. I don't think I've ever seen them haul one in though.

There are some buoys near the spillway at Travers and fishing at the legal boundaries is good for walleye, small- and mid-size pike; and trolling with a fly (bead head nymph such a zug bug) or hanging a fly off a slip bobber has yielded lake whitefish.

I have also caught whitefish from the shore (east) of Badger, several years ago, in the summer. They were cruising and stopping and casting towards them drove them away from shopre...but they would hit a sunken fly when retrieved back in.
