View Full Version : What bullets are you guys shooting these days?

I just decided to resurrect my 300 win mag. I used to shoot the coated XLC coated Barnes bullets with it.
What are you guys shooting mostly these days for a gun like this for up to 600 yard ranges? It's a hunting rifle not a paper puncher.
I use TSX in my go to rifle now but I am not a fan of them for a couple reasons and looking to try something else.
I have always been a fan of hornady but I am open to some ideas

Speer 180 BTSP is what I have found to shoot the best so far. Tried Nosler 180 partitions, accubonds and swift 180s as well but not enough testing yet
on them will no more in a month or so.

ive used accubonds for a long time in my 300,and late 2015 decided to try the 180gr E-Tips and impo they are the best bullet ive ever tried, almost 100% weight retention and excellent accuracy. They have all exited all animals ive used them on.Even on a big black bear through both shoulders.deff worth a try:sHa_shakeshout:

I use the TTSX in the 7mmstw, and the Accubond in my 6.5x55. I like the monometals at high velocity, but I won't use them where the potential impact velocity is much below 2500fps.

Just curious, when your quarry is laying on it's side, deader than a door nail. Do you proceed with an archeological search for "the" bullet and have a scale handy? Or do you get out your knife and proceed with the business at hand? :)

I started switching over to Barnes TSX and TTSX about 4 years ago. I'm shooting them in my magnums only. Accuracy is excellent and terminal performance is predictable. I recovered one 140 grain TTSX shot from a 280 Ackley Improved. Bullet angled through over 3' of elk and weighed 139 grains.

Just finishing off the last of my Winchester XP3s. I do not think they make them anymore or at least I cannot find them for sale. Have recovered two of the bullets and one had 97% retention and the other 92%. 180 grains. Bought some partitions that I will be using this year.

I have been mostly an Accubond guy for the last few years, with the exception of an elk with the 150gr TTSX out of a 300 mag.

This year, I am thinking of going with the Hornady ELD-X. Operates the same as an Accubond. Just loaded some up this past week.

Sooo many good options nowadays.

A little harder to come by and you'll pay a bit more but for hunting bullets i think it's hard to beat the Swift Sirocco's and they are more than capable to get the job done to in excess of the distance you mentioned. For game thats a little heavier give the A-Frames a try, they are both premium bullets. Buy a couple boxes and load them up, I think your search will be over.

How are you guys finding the Accubonds on game? I have heard good and bad.

Every animal I've shot with one has gone down . Some bang flops, some run 50-100 yds but all have died. In my rifles they are accurate enough to stay MOA out to 1000 yds and they are reasonably priced. That said once my bullet stock has been used up I think I'll give some of hornadys bullets a try.

To date I've taken
With the 300 wm 180 accubonds
2 bull elk
1 cow elk
2 moose

With the 308 150 accubonds
1 bull elk
5 wt bucks
4 two does

With 308 168 ETIP
I bull elk
I moose
5 wt does
1 wt buck

Some bullets were pass through some not. All bullets recovered held together and had good weight retention

Retired Captain R.G. From the E.F.D. did not have luck with these bullets. He lost some big animals shooting acu's and thought they were garbage. He was a fan of Partitions but later switched to tsx's. I shoot ttsx's in my 270...and have not lost an animal or recovered any of the bullets. Barnes lrx in the 7 mm rm and they are great performers. Just bought a Tikka 7 mm rm that I will try Hornady -Eld-x (162g) because of the b.c. For long range shooting. Have not decided if I will shoot game with these yet but they have some good reviews

I don't own any .30 Cal hunting rifles. I am strictly a 7mm guy. The 7mm RM gets 162gr Hornady ELD-X. The 7mm STW gets 168gr Nosler Long Range AccuBonds. H-1000 Powder behind both. Took a lot of testing to find the right ingredients.

How are you guys finding the Accubonds on game? I have heard good and bad.

Everything I have shot with them have basically flopped over and died. Exit wounds on everything. Lots of really good bullets, but the Accubond is a really good balance between expansion, penetration, and accuracy. If I had to only have one bullet for the rest of my life to use in Alberta, this would be the one. However, as 260 Rem often reminds me, I have a very short attention span, thus I change frequently, as variety is the spice of life.

I like the TTSX, Accubond and fusion/Deepcurls.

The TTSX expands moderately and penetrates forever and the Fusion/Deepcurls retain weight well and expand broadly. I find that the Accubond falls somewhere in the middle and all have been very accurate.

They actually don't act the same as an Accubond. One is bonded, the Accubond, and one has an interlock ring similar to the SST IIRC.

They are ballistically more stable than the Accubond also.

Berger VLD in my 308
TTSX in 280AI
Hornady Interlock in my 358 Norma

Been happy with Accubonds in some rifles as well
Not picky, find what shoots good and will work good on intended game.
Sometimes been stuck with one bullet because thats all that will group good in a particular gun. Wouldn't shoot TTSX in my 280AI but thats all she likes, thought I was going to burn out the barrel before I found a load that worked lol.

Nothing but 215 Berger out of my 300 Win Mag. Deadly killer from close range to WAY out there. Farthest was a whitetail at 734 yds. Nothing has taken a step. As long as you have a 10 twist barrel I'd try them. Use federal GM 215 M primers and H1000. Start them 30 thou off the lands. I'm driving them right at 3000 fps. It's a very hard combo to beat especially for the 500 to 1000 yd shots. You will lose some meat! But there's no tracking involved.

My gun is a full custom. Borden action, #3 Brux, Holland brake, McMillan Game Scout, NF SHV. Finished at 10 lb 2 oz. It is fast but in line with what other guys are running the 215 Berger. I got my reamer specs from a fellow on long range hunting forum. He actually runs the 215 at 3050 fps out of a 28" barrel. Mines a 26". A friend of mine also used my reamer to build his gun and we load both guns identical except he runs 2 gr less powder because his brass is heavier and he gets 3000 fps as well. We have shot the 215 in factory rifles and all have shot really well! If you are going to shoot out to 600 yds and farther I'd give it a try. I couldn't be happier. I don't even shoot my 300 RUM anymore.

I've been handloading 180gr Accubonds in my 300 win for years and shot quite a bit of game with them. Elk and deer. Very happy with them. 300 is too much for deer I think, but the AB don't blow them to pieces. Like a softer bullet.

I did finally get my 25-06 AI shooting and I'm going to use 80gr TTSX in it for deer. Try it out on a few before I decide for sure though.

I really struggled to find a premium bullet and load that would shoot well from my 20 year old Rem 700. Tried Hornady GMX, Accubonds and Partition 180's, various powders and loads. Finally tried Barnes TTSX 180's fuelled by RL22 (which I now have trouble finding), getting tiny 3 shot groups and 3100 fps. They do leave some copper in my barrel but it cleans easily with Wipeout.

I load 200 gr Sierra GK for all my open country hunting , before was using Nosler Partitions and Speer Hot Core all in 200 gr with very good result but found that GK works nicely up to 600 yds maybe more , have not killed anything futher then that.
Now playing with Hornady ELD X in 200gr ,they shoot good too and have higher BC then Game Kings. Will try them this season on elk.

I've never gotten to put this bullet into an animal, but I know some who have. Matrix Ballistics used to make bonded bullets. Those who I know that put those bullets to animals say that they performed like a Nosler accubond or partition.

The good thing about ordering from Matrix was that if I wanted bullets, I wouldn't have to go searching for the ones I wanted, bouncing around from store to store, etc. I'd just give him a call, and whether they were in stock or not, I'd have them in my mailbox within a week. Consistency from one lot to the next was very very good. That was very important when supplies of bullets was low and finding 2 boxes of the same thing was almost impossible at times...

once i start reloading, im going to try the TTSX as everyone seems to have good results.

Nube I've been running the 180 grain accubonds in my 300 for quite a while now. From right up close to about 450 yards I've had great performance with Them. I like the fact they open up even at a pretty modest velocity yet they seem to hold together pretty darned good for something that isn't mono metal. I've shot deer, antelope, moose, elk, bears, and a bunch of plains game with them and of the 25 or so head of game I have harvested with them I've never lost an animal. It's the only bullet I'm shooting nowadays in the 270 wsm, 300 win mag, 35 whelen, and my 375. Lots of real good options out there for the 300 winny.
